Optimal Control Policies for a Periodic Review Inventory System with Emergency Orders
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe a periodic review inventory system where emergency orders, which have a shorter supply lead time but are subject to higher ordering cost compared to regular orders, can be placed on a continuous basis. We consider the periodic review system in which the order cycles are relatively long so that they are possibly larger than the supply lead times. Study of such systems is important since they are often found in practice. We assume that the difference between the regular and emergency supply lead times is less than the order-cycle length. We develop a dynamic programming model and derive a stopping rule to end the computation and obtain optimal operation parameters. Computational results are included that support the contention that easily implemented policies can be computed with reasonable effort. q 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Turnpike policies for periodic review inventory model with emergency orders
This paper presents a periodic review capacitated lot sizing model with limited backlogging and a possibility of emergency orders. The main intention of placing emergency orders is to satisfy the demand as soon as a shortage occurs. It is assumed that the demands are independently distributed in successive periods. There are two resupply modes available: a regular mode and an emergency mode. He...
متن کاملA note on optimal policies for a periodic inventory system with emergency orders
In this article, we develop a dynamic programming model for a periodic review inventory system in which emergency orders can be placed at the start of each period, while regular orders are placed at the beginning of an order cycle (which consists of a number of periods). We assume that the regular and emergency supply lead times di!er by one period. We devise a simple algorithm of computing the...
متن کاملOne-for-One Period Policy and its Optimal Solution
In this paper we introduce the optimal solution for a simple and yet practical inventory policy with the important characteristic which eliminates the uncertainty in demand for suppliers. In this new policy which is different from the classical inventory policies, the time interval between any two consecutive orders is fixed and the quantity of each order is one. Assuming the fixed ordering cos...
متن کاملNew Policies for the Stochastic Inventory Control Problem with Two Supply Sources
We study an inventory system under periodic review in the presence of two suppliers (or delivery modes). The emergency supplier has a shorter lead-time than the regular supplier, but the unit price he offers is higher. Excess demand is backlogged. We show that the classical “Lost Sales inventory problem” is a special case of this problem. Then, we generalize the recently studied class of Dual I...
متن کاملPeriodic Review Inventory Systems with Continuous Demand and Discrete Order Sizes*
We study a single product inventory system with nonnegative setup cost in which the demand is a continuous random variable but orders are restricted to be integer valued. Optimal policies, when there are no setup costs, have a nice form. However, we show that, when the setup costs are nonzero, optimal policies may have a very counterintuitive form without any particular structure. We obtain a b...
