چکیده

We give an arithmetic criterion which is sufficient to imply the discreteness of various two-generator subgroups of PSL(2,C). We then examine certain two-generator groups which arise as extremals in various geometric problems in the theory of Kleinian groups, in particular those encountered in efforts to determine the smallest co-volume, the Margulis constant and the minimal distance between elliptic axes. We establish the discreteness and arithmeticity of a number of these extremal groups, the associated minimal volume arithmetic group in the commensurability class and we study whether or not the axis of a generator is simple.

On a Problem concerning Arithmeticity of Discrete Groups Acting

We discuss an open problem on the discreteness of subgroups of (SL2(R)) (n ≥ 2) generated by n linearly independent upper triangular matrices and n linearly independent lower triangular matrices. According to a conjecture by Margulis, only Hilbert modular groups can arise this way. The purpose of this note is to explain how this open problem is related to another conjecture on the orbit behavio...

Hyperbolic Orbifolds of Minimal Volume

We provide a survey of hyperbolic orbifolds of minimal volume, starting with the results of Siegel in two dimensions and with the contributions of Gehring, Martin and others in three dimensions. For higher dimensions, we summarise some of the most important results, due to Belolipetsky, Emery and Hild, by discussing related features such as hyperbolic Coxeter groups, arithmeticity and consequen...

Arithmeticity vs. Non-linearity for Irreducible Lattices

We establish an arithmeticity vs. non-linearity alternative for irreducible lattices in suitable product groups, for instance products of topologically simple groups. This applies notably to a (large class of) Kac-Moody groups. The alternative relies heavily on the superrigidity theorem we propose in [Md], since we follow Margulis’ reduction of arithmeticity to superrigidity.

Discreteness-induced concentration inversion in mesoscopic chemical systems.

Molecular discreteness is apparent in small-volume chemical systems, such as biological cells, leading to stochastic kinetics. Here we present a theoretical framework to understand the effects of discreteness on the steady state of a monostable chemical reaction network. We consider independent realizations of the same chemical system in compartments of different volumes. Rate equations ignore ...
