Organophosphate Poisoning

چکیده
They are used as pesticides but can also be used as 'nerve gas'. This is prohibited under the Geneva Convention but could be used by terrorists or rogue regimes. There is some suggestion that the use of OP pesticides may have caused some neurotoxicity and be responsible for 'Gulf War syndrome'. Certainly, insecticides were freely used, as were many other chemicals. The syndrome is inconsistent in those affected but is neither simply a post-traumatic stress disorder nor the result of acute OP poisoning and is likely to represent low-level chronic toxicity. [1, 2, 3, 4] This is supported by a case control study which reported that chronic exposure to OP pesticides can lead both to depressive and anxiety disorders and also to cognitive defects (unrelated to psychiatric disorders). [4] This is a significant problem which may also affect children and further research in this field is necessary. [5]

Prevalence of Organophosphate Poisoning In Batticaloa, Sri Lanka
Background: Deliberate self-harm (DSH) is a global problem which has steadily increased over the past few years in developing countries and has become as one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in these countries. The aim of this prospective study was to analyze the prevalence of organophosphate poisoning among other acute DSH cases admitted to the medical ward at Batticaloa Teaching...
متن کاملOrganophosphate poisoning and management, an update.
Organophosphate poisoning is characterised for the most part, by acute incidents. Management is by way of first aid (in mild poisoning) and use of atropine with or without the oximes, (in moderate to severe poisoning). Of late, it has become apparent that subchronic and chronic organophosphate poisoning are a common manifestation. This review paper summarises this triphasic nature of organophos...
متن کاملThe use of self-reported symptoms as a proxy for acute organophosphate poisoning after exposure to chlorpyrifos 50% plus cypermethrin 5% among Nepali farmers: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study
BACKGROUND Previous studies stating a high prevalence of occupational acute pesticide poisoning in developing countries have mainly relied on measurements of the rather non-specific self-reported acute pesticide poisoning symptoms. Only a few studies have measured the biomarker plasma cholinesterase (PchE) activity, in addition to the symptoms, when assessing occupational acute pesticide poison...

Organophosphate compounds are the organic derivatives of Phosphorous containing acids and their effect on neuromuscular junction and Autonomic Synapses is clinically important. After exposure these agents cause acute and sub acute manifestations depending on the type and severity of the agents like Acute Cholinergic Manifestations, Intermediate Syndrome with Nicotinic features and Delayed Centr...
