چکیده

We report results from experiments with a pseudo-one-dimensional Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction that employs 1,4-cyclohexanedione as its organic substrate. This excitable system shows traveling oxidation pulses and pulse trains that can undergo complex sequences of propagation failures. Moreover, we present examples for i breathing pulses that undergo periodic changes in speed and size and ii backfiring pulses that near their back repeatedly generate new pulses propagating in opposite direction. © 2006 American Institute of Physics. Pulse bifurcations and instabilities in an excitable medium: computations in finite ring domains.

We investigate the instabilities and bifurcations of traveling pulses in a model excitable medium; in particular, we discuss three different scenarios involving either the loss of stability or disappearance of stable pulses. In numerical simulations beyond the instabilities we observe replication of pulses ("backfiring") resulting in complex periodic or spatiotemporally chaotic dynamics as well...

Pulse Dynamics in Coupled Excitable Fibers: Soliton-like Collision, Recombination, and Overtaking

We study the dynamics of a reaction-diffusion system composed of two mutually coupled excitable fibers. We focus on the situation in which dynamical properties of the two fibers are not identical because of the parameter difference between the fibers. Using the spatially one-dimensional FitzHugh-Nagumo equations as a model of a single excitable fiber, we show that the system exhibits a rich var...

Self-organized pacemakers and bistability of pulses in an excitable medium.

Pattern formation in an excitable medium described by a three-component reaction-diffusion system is investigated. Our focus is on stable self-organized pacemakers which give rise to spatially extended target patterns. Bistability of pulse solutions in the excitable regime is also reported, and interactions of the different pulses with each other and the pacemaker are studied. Self-organized pa...

Colliding dissipative pulses—the shooting manifold

We study multi-pulse solutions in excitable media. Under the assumption that a single pulse is asymptotically stable, we show that there is a well-defined ”shooting manifold”, consisting of two pulses traveling towards each other. In the phase space, the two-dimensional manifold is a graph over the manifold of linear superpositions of two pulses located at x1 and x2, with x1 − x2 1. It is local...

Wave initiation through spatiotemporally controllable perturbations.

We study the initiation of pulses and fronts in a two-dimensional catalytic reaction-diffusion system: CO oxidation on Pt(110). Using a computer-controlled mobile focused laser beam, we impart various patterns (in space and time) of localized temperature "kicks" to the surface. We explore, and also rationalize through modeling, the cooperativity of such individually subcritical perturbations in...
