Egyptian Hepatic Veno-Occlusive Disease: Surgical Point of View
نویسنده
چکیده
Originally the syndrome was described in South Africa at 1920, but at present it is endemic in Jamaica, encountered in Afghanistan and India. The syndrome was described under dif‐ ferent names, from Jamaica the disease was described under the term Jamaican veno-occlu‐ sive disease, in India the disease was given the term Indian childhood Cirrhosis (ICC), in Europe HVOD has been called endophlebitis obliterans of which sporadic cases were descri‐ bed, as in Germany. Hepatic venoocclusive disease was examined by scanning electron mi‐ croscopy (SEM). SEM correlated its histology and postmortem examination and disclosed microscopic occlusion of the centrilobular and sublobular veins in the liver, these veins were occluded partially or completely by intimal and medial thickening of their walls due to pro‐ liferation of collagen and reticulin fibers. In addition to venous obliteration, which had not been demonstrated by other techniques, frequent occlusion of the sinusoidal opening into the central veins was observed by SEM. [4], [5], [6].

CASE STUDY Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease in myeloproliferative disorder
The present study reports a case of biopsy-proven pulmonary veno-occlusive disease as a cause of severe pulmonary hypertension in a patient suffering from a chronic myeloproliferative disorder. The pulmonary disease evolved favourably under treatment with defibrotide, a pro-fibrinolytic medication used in hepatic veno-occlusive disease.

A patient with rheumatoid arthritis developed hepatic veno-occlusive disease following the use of azathioprine. Although azathioprine induced veno-occlusive disease is suspected to occur more frequently in patients with autoimmune dysfunction, it has not previously been reported as a complication of treatment in rheumatoid arthritis. The mechanism responsible for this condition remains unknown.
متن کاملA case of veno-occlusive disease of the liver in Britain associated with herbal tea consumption.
Veno-occlusive disease of the liver with clinical and pathological features similar to those of the condition occurring in the Caribbean is described in a young woman resident in Britain. The diagnosis was made from liver biopsies and hepatic venography and was confirmed at necropsy. Small amounts of pyrroliziding alkaloids were recovered from a sample of mate (Paraguay) tea, owned by the patie...

Abdominal venous thrombosis may present as splanchnic venous thrombosis (SVT) (occlusion of portal, splenic, superior or inferior mesenteric veins) or Budd- Chiari Syndrome (BCS) (thrombosis of inferior vena cava and/or hepatic veins). The aim of this review is to report the scanty data available for SVT in the South Mediterranean area. In one Egyptian study, the possible circumstantial risk fa...
