چکیده

To refine the early Middle Miocene (ca. 16 Ma) paleomagnetic direction in the Motegi area, we collected paleomagnetic samples from dacite domes and intrusives of the Motegi Formation. Characteristic remanent magnetization components were revealed by stepwise demagnetization, which were used to calculate site-mean directions for 10 sites. Together with published data from 11 andesite and basalt sites, we obtained a refined formation-mean direction of D = 188.0°, I = −59.5°, a 95 = 5.8° (21 sites), and a corresponding paleomagnetic pole at 82.0°N, 186.3°E, A 95 = 7.3°. All the 21 sites possess reversed polarity, suggesting geologically rapid formation of all lithologies of the Motegi Formation during a single polarity chron (C5Br: 15.16–15.97 Ma). We conclude that detectable latitudinal displacement and vertical-axis rotation with respect to the eastern part of the Asian continent have not taken place in the Motegi area since 16 Ma. This provides support for the idea (Hoshi and Takahashi, 1997) that no significant rotation has occurred in this area since 18 Ma.

Discordant paleomagnetic direction in Miocene rocks from the central Tarim Basin: evidence for local deformation and inclination shallowing

From exposures at the southeastern end of the Maza Tagh range in the central Tarim Basin (latitude: 38.5‡N; longitude: 80.5‡E), 55 paleomagnetic sites were collected from red mudstones and sandstones of the Miocene Wuqia Formation. Thermal demagnetization revealed a high unblocking temperature characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM). Five sites collected across a kink fold yield a positive...

Influence of climate, elevation, and land use in regional herpetofaunal distribution in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan

Understanding the relationship between the distribution of organisms and their environment is important for regional conservation planning. While most herpetofaunal community studies address environmental influence on species richness, few studies describe environmental influence on species composition at geographic scales. Field surveys of herpetofauna were conducted during 1994-2000 in Tochig...

The Maipo Orocline: A first scale structural feature in the Miocene to Recent geodynamic evolution in the central Chilean Andes

In this paper we show the results of a paleomagnetic study carried out along the western Andes of central Chile from 30° to 36°S. Whereas paleomagnetic analysis from Jurassic to Late Cretaceous rocks in the Pampean flat slab segment shows small or non significant clockwise vertical-axis rotations, results obtained in Late Jurassic to Neogeone rocks to the south, on the normal subduction segment...

First fossil occurrence of a filefish (Tetraodontiformes; Monacanthidae) in Asia, from the Middle Miocene in Nagano Prefecture, central Japan.

A new fossil filefish, Aluterus shigensis sp. nov., with a close resemblance to the extant Aluterus scriptus (Osbeck), is described from the Middle Miocene Bessho Formation in Nagano Prefecture, central Japan. It is characterized by: 21 total vertebrae; very slender and long first dorsal spine with tiny anterior barbs; thin and lancet-shaped basal pterygiophore of the spiny dorsal fin, with its...
