چکیده

Variable-density groundwater flow models are often used to understand the complex nature of coastal groundwater systems. Hydrodynamic dispersion is a difficult process to represent with a model because of spatially varying hydraulic conductivity and temporally varying hydrologic boundary conditions. Temporal variations in water levels, for example, that occur in the field are often averaged into boundary conditions in a model. Three cross-sectional models were developed to test the response of a simulated saltwater interface to different methods for treating the temporally variability in the ocean boundary condition. Results indicate that if temporal tidal variations in model are averaged, simulated concentrations within the interface can be quite different than for the same model that includes the tidal variations. This observation indicates that for certain aquifers, it may not be appropriate to calibrate a variable-density model at one temporal scale and apply the model to a different temporal scale. KEY TERMS: Hydrodynamic dispersion, saltwater intrusion, saltwater interface

Assessment of Saltwater Pollution in Azarshahr Plain Groundwater, Iran: Conjugating GALDIT Method and Geostatistics

Overutilization of groundwater resources can put their quality under stress. It could be base on rapid declination in groundwater level leading to salt water intrusion in the coastal aquifers. The objective of this study was to map the vulnerability of salt water intrusion of the Urmia Lake, Iran to nearby coastal aquifer (Azarshahr) using GALDIT method. The GALDIT index based on six parameters...

Saltwater intrusion vulnerability assessment using AHP-GALDIT model in Kashan plain aquifer as critical aquifer in a semi-arid region

Owing to population growth and water demand, coastal aquifers all over the world are over–pumped, resulting in serious problems such as saltwater intrusion. So, in these conditions, assessing the groundwater system’s vulnerability and finding areas with saltwater intrusion potential are vital for the better management of aquifers. In this study, AHP-GALDIT was applied to saltwater intrusion vul...

Laboratory study of the simultaneous effect of discharge well and cut of wall on reducing saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers

These days, the sea level rising and excessive harvesting of coastal aquifers has caused the intrusion of saltwater into underground water sources. In this study, the performance of the use of cut of wall, discharge well, and their simultaneous use in preventing saltwater intrusion has been evaluated in a laboratory model and under different scenarios. The results show that the appropriate use ...

Numerical Modeling of Seawater Intrusion in Coastal Aquifer Using Finite Volume Unstructured Mesh Method

Saltwater intrusion widely occurs in coastal areas. Therefore, dissolved salts are the most common contaminants in freshwater in coastal aquifers and this contamination arises from saltwater invasion, caused primarily by human activities due to heavy urbanization. For investigation of the methods of increasing storage of fresh ground water and prevention of seawater encroachment, predicting the...

Axisymmetric simulation of aquifer storage and recovery with SEAWAT and the Sea Water Intrusion (SWI) Package for MODFLOW

SEAWAT and the Sea Water Intrusion (SWI) Package for MODFLOW were used to simulate hypothetical aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) scenarios under constantand variable-density conditions. To test the codes, both models were used to represent two-dimensional axisymmetric groundwater flow near an ASR well. The models were “tricked” into representing axisymmetric flow by multiplying the input valu...
