چکیده

This study presents a special problem on vertical distribution for sediment and copper in hyper-concentrated turbulent solid-liquid system that is essentially different from the ordinary low-concentrated turbulent system. A resonance type turbulent simulation equipment is used for the experimental study in which a vertically uniform turbulent field of the mixture of loess and water is produced in a testing cylinder with a grille stirrer that moves up and down harmoniously with varying vibration frequencies. In order to compare the variations of the vertical profiles of sediment and copper in low- and hyper-concentrated solid-liquid system, different scenarios for input sediment content ranging from 5 to 800 kg/m3 was considered in the experimental studies. It was found that solids copper content increases with input sediment content, S0, and reaches its peak as S0 goes to 10 kg/m3 and then decreases rapidly with increasing input sediment content. Such a behavior is possibly resulted from the joint effect of the specific adsorption of copper on loess, precipitation of carbonate and hydroxide of copper due to high carbonate content in the loess and the so-called "particulate concentration effect" due to the present of the sediment variation in water. The vertical sediment concentration distribution resulted from the uniform turbulence is generally uniform, but slight non-uniformity does occur as sediment concentration exceeds certain value. However, the vertical concentration distributions of soluble copper seem not to be affected much by the variation of sediment concentrations.

Analysis of Bio-Obtainable Endocrine Disrupting Metals in River Water and Sediment, Sewage Influent/Effluent, Sludge, Leachate, and Concentrated Leachate, in the Irish Midlands Shannon Catchment

The application of an acid digestion and subsequent solid-phase extraction (SPE) procedure were implemented as preliminary treatments prior to quantifying the levels of potentially endocrine disrupting metals (EDMs) in a variety of solid and liquid matrices. These included (solid) river sediment, leachate sediment and sewage sludge and also (liquid) river water, landfill leachate, concentrated ...

Soil erosion and sediment transport in the gullied Loess Plateau: Scale effects and their mechanisms

Scale effects exist in the whole process of rainfall―runoff―soil erosion―sediment transport in river basins. The differences of hydrographs and sediment graphs in different positions in a river basin are treated as basic scale effects, which are more complex in the gullied Loess Plateau, a region notorious for high intensity soil erosion and hyper-concentrated sediment-laden flow. The up-scalin...

Effect of colloidal Particles associated with the liquid bridge in sticking during drying in Superheated Steam

It is very important in the design of a drying system is to evaluate sticking behaviour of the materials goes under drying. A new approach to the sticking issue is applied in this study by carrying out a sticking test for the liquid associated with the materials under study. It was found that the liquid bridge is responsible of the initial sticking of the materials to the contact surface and th...

Sample purification for analysis of organochlorine pesticides in sediment and fish muscle.

The methods of sample purification for determinations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in sediment and fish muscle were investigated in this study. A two-step procedure with preliminary cleanup and florisil column fraction was adopted. The working conditions of florisil column were firstly optimized. As to preliminary cleanup, liquid-liquid extraction by mixture of dimethyl formamide (DMF) a...

Gas Absorption with Chemical Reaction in Turbulent Flow

In order to increase the rate of gas absorption, chemical reaction in the liquid phase is considered. The purpose of this paper was to simulate gas absorption process by a liquid film over a spherical packing incorporating eddy viscosity and diffusivity. Second order chemical reaction for two different cases (fast and slow) were considered. The system partial differential equations obtained...
