چکیده

BACKGROUND The CBCT imaging technique exhibits proper accuracy to determine the internal anatomy of teeth. Therefore, this technique can use to estimate age by measuring the amount of decrease in the volume of the pulpal cavity of teeth. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the correlation between chronological age and pulp-to-tooth volume ratios in anterior teeth with the use of the CBCT technique and to determine a regression model to estimate human age. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this present descriptive-analytical study, 122 subjects (46 males and 76 females), with an age range of 13-70 years, were evaluated. The MIMICS software program was used to determine the pulp-to-tooth volume ratios in 732 anterior teeth. Regression analysis was used to assess the correlation between age and pulp to tooth volume ratios. RESULTS In all the teeth evaluated, there was an inverse and significant correlation between age and the pulp-to-tooth volume ratios in males and females, with a stronger correlation in males. In addition, such a correlation was stronger in maxillary central incisors and canines. In the model in which the mean of ratios in anterior teeth was used to estimate age the correlation was stronger compared to that in single tooth. CONCLUSIONS In general, the results of the present study showed that it is advisable to use the mean of all the ratios of anterior teeth in forensics to estimate age. Key words:Age estimation , cone-beam CT, forensic dentistry, secondary dentin, pulp cavity.

Variations in pulp/tooth area ratio as an indicator of age: a preliminary study.

This paper details a method for age determination of adults from single rooted teeth. The sample consisted of 100 Italian white Caucasian patients (46 men, 54 women) aged between 18 and 72 years. The single rooted maxillary right canine was utilized in this preliminary study. Pulp/root ration, tooth length, pulp/tooth length ratio, pulp/tooth area and pulp/root width ratios at three different l...

Evaluation of age-related changes with cross-sectional CT imaging of teeth

Tooth pulp atrophy occurs with increasing age. An age estimation procedure using dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging was developed. Clinical dental CBCT images of 60 patients (aged from 20 to 80 years) were evaluated. The ratio of the cross-sectional area of the pulp cavity to the cross-sectional area of the tooth (pulp cavity ratio) was calculated. The pulp cavity ratio in the ...

Age Estimation Using Pulp Chamber Volume of First Molars from Cone Beam Computed Tomography Images in Indian Population

The present study established amathematical model for age estimation among the Indian population using the pulp chamber volume of first maxillary and mandibular molars with the use of CBCT images, and assessed the mathematical equation for age estimation. CBCT images of 564 maxillary first molars and 487 mandibular first molars were collected from 340 individuals to assess the mathematical mode...

A new age estimation procedure based on the 3D CBCT study of the pulp cavity and hard tissues of the teeth for forensic purposes: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND Dental age of adults can be estimated by the analysis of the progressive physiological and degenerative phenomena which affect dental tissues. The pulp-dentinal complex is one of the dental structures that show modifications related to age, mainly resulting in the reduction of the pulp chamber volume due to the continual deposition of secondary dentin. The study aims to evaluate the ...
