چکیده

The chloroplast is essential for photosynthesis and the production of hormones and metabolites. As a consequence, its biogenesis and development needs to be coordinated with seedling growth to ensure optimal rates of photosynthesis without oxidative damage upon seedling emergence. Studies into the processes of biogenesis and development of chloroplasts have shown how important chloroplast development during germination is for plant vitality, seed set, and growth. Indeed, even if chloroplast development is only impaired in cotyledons (the embryonic leaves of germinating seedlings) with normal chloroplast development in true leaves, plant growth and yield can be negatively impacted. Thus, it is necessary to understand the regulation and mechanism of chloroplast development. This reviewwill concentrate on how chloroplasts differentiate, giving emphasis to current insights on the different steps of chloroplast development as well as into regulatory factors and molecular requirements for chloroplast biogenesis and development gained from genetic and mutagenic studies. Given the breadth of the topic, we are restricted to citing examples of recent articles and reviews, with a strong emphasis on Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), because the majority of the genetics studies have been performed on this model plant.

Arabidopsis EMB1990 Encoding a Plastid-Targeted YlmG Protein Is Required for Chloroplast Biogenesis and Embryo Development

In higher plants, embryo development originated from fertilized egg cell is the first step of the life cycle. The chloroplast participates in many essential metabolic pathways, and its function is highly associated with embryo development. However, the mechanisms and relevant genetic components by which the chloroplast functions in embryogenesis are largely uncharacterized. In this paper, we de...

Plastid biogenesis, between light and shadows.

Plastids are cellular organelles which originated when a photosynthetic prokaryote was engulfed by the eukaryotic ancestor of green and red algae and land plants. Plastids have diversified in plants from their original function as chloroplasts to fulfil a variety of other roles in metabolite biosynthesis and in storage, or purely to facilitate their own transmission, according to the cell type ...

A Young Seedling Stripe2 phenotype in rice is caused by mutation of a chloroplast-localized nucleoside diphosphate kinase 2 required for chloroplast biogenesis

Chloroplast development and chlorophyll (Chl) biosynthesis in plants are regulated by many genes, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely elusive. We isolated a rice mutant named yss2 (young seedling stripe2) with a striated seedling phenotype beginning from leaf 2 of delayed plant growth. The mutant developed normal green leaves from leaf 5, but reduced tillering and chlorotic l...

The cytoskeleton and the peroxisomal-targeted snowy cotyledon3 protein are required for chloroplast development in Arabidopsis.

Here, we describe the snowy cotyledon3 (sco3-1) mutation, which impairs chloroplast and etioplast development in Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings. SCO3 is a member of a largely uncharacterized protein family unique to the plant kingdom. The sco3-1 mutation alters chloroplast morphology and development, reduces chlorophyll accumulation, impairs thylakoid formation and photosynthesis in seedlings, ...
