چکیده

Purpose: Two of the major functions of the human vocal tract are feeding and speaking. As ontogenetically and phylogenetically feeding tasks precede speaking tasks, it has been hypothesised that the skilled movements of the orofacial articulators specific to speech may have evolved from feeding functions. Our objective is to bring evidence to support this hypothesis. Method: Vocal tract articulatory measurements on a male subject have been recorded for speech and feeding by Electromagnetic Articulography. Two linear articulatory models of the jaw/tongue system have been built through statistical analysis for both speech and feeding tasks. Results: The two articulatory models show similar reconstruction accuracy, with 97% and 99% of the variance explained by the five parameters of each model. The speech articulations can be reconstructed from the feeding model with a Root Mean Square error of +0.05 cm from the optimal reconstruction, this error increasing to +0.13 cm for the feeding articulations reconstructed from the speech model. Conclusion: The speech articulations can be reconstructed to a large extent from the feeding movements, the reverse remaining false. It suggests that the speech movements could be considered as a subset of the feeding movements and supports the hypothesis that speech movements may have evolved from feeding movements.

Oral Motor Indexes in Iranian 4- to 9-month-old infants: A short report

Introduction: Examination of oral motor indices in infants helps treatment team members identify infants who are delayed in these indices earlier and use the order of occurrence of these indices in normal infants as a criterion for treating infants with motor delay. Literature shows that oral movement indices are different in different races, cultures, and languages. The aim of this study was t...

A magnetic resonance imaging study on the articulatory and acoustic speech parameters of Malay vowels

The phonetic properties of six Malay vowels are investigated using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to visualize the vocal tract in order to obtain dynamic articulatory parameters during speech production. To resolve image blurring due to the tongue movement during the scanning process, a method based on active contour extraction is used to track tongue contours. The proposed method efficiently...

Development and implementation of fiducial markers for vocal tract MRI imaging and speech articulatory modelling

MRI allows characterizing the shape and position of speech articulators, but not tracking flesh points, since there are no physiological landmarks reliably associated with the highly deformable tissues of these articulators. This information is, however, interesting for studying the biomechanical properties of these organs as well as for modelling the relations between measurement modalities su...

Automatic animation of an articulatory tongue model from ultrasound images using Gaussian mixture regression

This paper presents a method for automatically animating the articulatory tongue model of a reference speaker from ultrasound images of the tongue of another speaker. This work is developed in the context of speech therapy based on visual biofeedback, where a speaker is provided with visual information about his/her own articulation. In our approach, the feedback is delivered via an articulator...

Robust word recognition using articulatory trajectories and gestures

Articulatory Phonology views speech as an ensemble of constricting events (e.g. narrowing lips, raising tongue tip), gestures, at distinct organs (lips, tongue tip, tongue body, velum, and glottis) along the vocal tract. This study shows that articulatory information in the form of gestures and their output trajectories (tract variable time functions or TVs) can help to improve the performance ...
