Noise source models for fricative consonants
نویسندگان
چکیده
Hybrid source models for fricative consonants are derived based on aeroacoustic principles of sound generation employing vocal tract area functions obtained from magnetic resonance imaging data of voiced and unvoiced English fricatives. Results based on data from a male and a female subject indicate that a linear source-filter model is fairly adequate for capturing essential spectral characteristics of sustained voiced and unvoiced strident fricatives below 10 kHz. The hybrid source models employ a combination of acoustic monopole and distributed dipole sources, and a voice source in the case of the voiced fricatives. The number of sources, source locations, and spectral characteristics and the relative source levels are chosen based on an analysis-by-synthesis approach and are motivated by aeroacoustic theory of speech production. The resulting model is computationally efficient and can be readily used for synthesis.

Analysis and synthesis of fricative consonants
This thesis studies and interprets the -entory of acoustic events associated with the changing vocal-tract configurations .:at characterize fricatives preceding vowels. Theoretical considerations of the articulatory, aerodynamic and acoustic aspects of the production of fricatives provide the foundation for interpreting the acoustic data. Fricative characteristics are considered with respect to...

متن کاملArticulatory variability and fricative noise in apical vowels
Standard Mandarin (SM) apical vowels have tongue postures similar to the fricative consonants that obligatorily precede them, but are thought to lack the consonants’ fricative noise. Lee-Kim [10] argues that in SM apical vowels, a slight reduction of constriction at the tongue blade or tip reduces fricative noise, essentially resulting in syllabic approximants. Using lingual ultrasound to exami...
متن کاملNoise Sources and Area Functions for the Synthesis of Fricative Consonants
In this study, we characterize the noise sources and the critical parts of vocal tract area functions for the synthesis of voiceless fricatives. We derive these characteristics indirectly by fitting synthetic to natural fricative spectra in an interactive procedure. The adjustable parameters are the number, location, type, amplitude, and spectral shape of the noise sources as well as the cross-...
متن کاملThe nature of speech production impairments in anterior aphasics: an acoustic analysis of voicing in fricative consonants.
This study investigated the acoustic characteristics of voicing in English fricative consonants produced by anterior aphasics and the effects of phonetic context on these characteristics. Three patients produced voiced and voiceless fricative-vowel syllables in isolation, following a voiced velar stop, and following a voiceless velar stop. Acoustic analyses were conducted of the amplitude and p...
