چکیده

We present analytical scaling laws for self–similar advection dominated flows. The spectra from these systems range from 10 – 10 Hz, and are determined by considering cooling of electrons through synchrotron, bremsstrahlung, and Compton processes. We show that the spectra can be quite accurately reproduced without detailed numerical calculations, and that there is a strong testable correlation between the radio and X-ray fluxes from these systems. We describe how different regions of the spectrum scale with the mass of the accreting black hole, M , the accretion rate of the gas, Ṁ , and the equilibrium temperature of the electrons, Te. We show that the universal radio spectral index of 1/3 observed in most elliptical galaxies (Slee et al. 1994) is a natural consequence of self–absorbed synchrotron radiation from these flows. We also give expressions for the total luminosity of these flows, and the critical accretion rate, Ṁcrit, above which the advection solutions cease to exist. We find that for most cases of interest the equilibrium electron temperature is fairly insensitive to M , Ṁ , and parameters in the model. We apply these results to low luminosity black holes in galactic nuclei. We show that the problem posed by Fabian & Canizares (1988) of whether bright elliptical galaxies host dead quasars is resolved, as pointed out recently by Fabian & Rees (1995), by considering advection–dominated flows.

Advection-dominated Accretion Flows: Optically Thin Solutions

General properties of advection-dominated accretion ows are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the optically thin branch of solutions, which has very high ion and electron temperatures and is thermally stable. This solution branch has been applied to a number of low-luminosity accreting black holes. The models have resolved some puzzles and have provided a straightforward explanation of th...

The Blandford-znajek Mechanism and Emission from Isolated Accreting Black Holes

In the presence of a magnetic field, rotational energy can be extracted from black holes via the Blandford-Znajek mechanism. We use self-similar advection dominated accretion (ADAF) models to estimate the efficiency of this mechanism for black holes accreting from geometrically thick disks, in the light of recent magnetohydrodynamic disk simulations, and show that the power from electromagnetic...

Advection-Dominated Models of Luminous Accreting Black Holes

It has been found that a class of optically-thin two-temperature advection-dominated accretion solutions explains many observations of low-luminosity accreting black holes. Here it is shown that these models give a satisfactory description also of higher luminosity systems, provided the viscosity parameter is large. The models reproduce the spectra of black hole X-ray binaries in the Low State,...

Microflares in accretion disks

We have investigated the phenomenon of explosive chromospheric evaporation from an accretion disk as a mechanism for fast variability in accreting sources such as low mass X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei. This has been done in the context of advection dominated accretion flows, allowing both high and low states to be considered. This mechanism can in principle produce sub-millisecond ...

Evidence for Jet Domination of the Nuclear Radio Emission in Low-luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei

We present simultaneous, sub-arcsecond (≤ 50 pc) resolution 5 GHz, 8.4 GHz, and 15 GHz VLAa observations of a well-defined sample of sixteen low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs). The radio emission in most of these nuclei does not show the rising spectrum (0.2. s . 1.3, Lν ∝ νs) expected from thermal electrons in an advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF) with or without weak to mod...
