range; see Lee et al. 2009). Aircraft emissions are expected to increase with projected growth in aviation and will likely result in enhanced environmental impacts unless scientif ically informed mitigation measures are implemented. Environmental protection is an important component of the U.S. Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen; information online at www.jpdo. gov/nextgen.asp). NextGen is being implemented to meet projected growth in aviation and to achieve a balance between its economic and transport benefits and the environmental impacts. To meet NextGen environmental goals, the Federal Aviation Administration has developed the Aviation Climate Change Research Initiative (ACCRI) with participation from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The main objective of ACCRI is to identify and address key scientific gaps and uncertainties while providing timely scientific input to inform decision making. Here, we provide a brief overview of current research gaps and priorities that were identified by the ACCRI-funded white papers, a workshop, and a report (online at www.faa.gov/about/office_org/ headquarters_offices/aep/aviation_climate/). Details on these priorities are provided in companion papers published in the present issue. Using gap analysis and priority-driven research reduces

The climate impact of aviation aerosols

[1] A comprehensive general circulation model (GCM) is used to estimate the climate impact of aviation emissions of black carbon (BC) and sulfate (SO4) aerosols. Aviation BC is found not to exert significant radiative forcing impacts, when BC nucleating efficiencies in line with observations are used. Sulfate emissions from aircraft are found to alter liquid clouds at altitudes below emission (...

Integration of Linear Dynamic Emission and Climate Models with Air Traffic Simulations

Future air traffic management systems are required to balance the conflicting objectives of maximizing safety and efficiency of traffic flows while minimizing the climate impact of aviation emissions and contrails. Integrating emission and climate models together with air traffic simulations improve the understanding of the complex interaction between the physical climate system, carbon and oth...

Towards Climate Optimized Flight Trajectories in a Climate Model: AirTraf

Aviation contributes to the anthropogenic climate impact through emissions. Mobility becomes more and more important to society and hence air transportation is expected to grow further over the next decades. Mitigating the climate impact from aviation emissions is needed and a climate compatible air transportation system is required for a sustainable development of commercial aviation. A number...

A simple framework for assessing the trade-off between the climate impact of aviation carbon dioxide emissions and contrails for a single flight

Persistent contrails are an important climate impact of aviation which could potentially be reduced by re-routing aircraft to avoid contrailing; however this generally increases both the flight length and its corresponding CO2 emissions. Here, we provide a simple framework to assess the trade-off between the climate impact of CO2 emissions and contrails for a single flight, in terms of the abso...
