چکیده

Preliminary observations indicated that the shrimp Crangon crangon (L.) appeared to be affected by the level of the ambient noise expressed as sound pressure. The significance of ~ t s metabolic response was studied by comparing its ammonia excretion rate under usual laboratory conditions E (= +25 dB pbar-l) to its rate under sound-proof conditions C (= -4 dB pbar-l). The relationship between these 2 measured excretion rates was expressed by the equation: E = 1.225 C 0.01329 (r = 0.81). Thus a mean 3OdB-increased sound pressure led to a 22 % increase of the ammonia excretion rate; simultaneously, a 15 % increase of the 0, consumption rate was noticed. The metabolic response to a high ambient noise level was fully expressed within a few hours and there was no evidence for any adaptative reduction of metabolic rates over the period of observation (5 d). Shrimpsize and/or -age as much as the noise spectrum should be taken into account when metabolic responses of C. crangon to its acoustic environment are considered.

Pathology and ultrastructure of an intranuclear bacilliform virus (IBV) infecting brown shrimp Crangon crangon (Decapoda: Crangonidae).

The brown shrimp Crangon crangon supports an important fishery in Europe (over 25000 t, valued at 80 million euros in 2000). Through the course of histopathological screening of crustaceans from the Clyde estuary, western Scotland, for the biological effect of contaminants, we have discovered a highly prevalent (up to 100%) non-occluded intranuclear bacilliform virus (IBV) infection in the hepa...

Osmoregulation, immunolocalization of Na+/K+-ATPase, and ultrastructure of branchial epithelia in the developing brown shrimp, Crangon crangon (Decapoda, Caridea).

Aspects of osmoregulation including salinity tolerance, osmoregulatory capacity, location of transporting epithelia, and the expression of the enzyme Na+/K+-ATPase were investigated in the developing brown shrimp, Crangon crangon (L.), from the North Sea. Early developmental stages and large juveniles were exposed to a wide range of salinities for measurement of hemolymph osmolality and surviva...

ECOREGION North Sea SUBJECT Request from Germany and the Netherlands on the potential need for a management of brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) in the North Sea

ICES indicates how the management of the Crangon crangon fishery might be considered. Due to the short life span of C. crangon an annual stock assessment and annual TACs are not suitable. Appropriate management would be needed to effectively limit the fishing effort, as reaching the maximum sustainable yield does not seem possible unless effort is reduced from the current level. A harvest contr...

Population dynamics, distribution and secondary production of the brown shrimp Crangon crangon (L.) in a southern European estuary. Latitudinal variations

The brown shrimp Crangon crangon (Linnaeus, 1758) occurs in highly productive European estuaries (between 45°N and 57°N) with strong tidal movements on sandy and muddy substrata (Tiews, 1970). It is the dominant mobile epibenthic species in northern Europe (e.g. Pihl and Rosenberg, 1982; Beyst et al., 2002; Amara and Paul, 2003). Due to its abundance, C. crangon is an important prey for SCIENTI...

Nursery function of Wadden Sea tidal flats for the brown shrimp Crangon crangon

The significance of the tidal zone as nursery area for the brown shrimp Crangon crangon became evident during a study on density and size-distribution of predator populations on a 50 km2 tidal flat in the western Wadden Sea (The Netherlands). A clear picture of the nursery system and its function in the annual cycle of brown shrimp is obtained when nursery population-data are combined with expe...
