چکیده

It is previously known that under inflation alone a spherical rubber membrane balloon may bifurcate into a pear shape when the tension in the membrane reaches a maximum, but the existence of such a maximum depends on the material model used: the maximum exists for the Ogden model, but does not exist for the neoHookean, Mooney-Rivlin or Gent model. This paper discusses how such a situation is changed when a pressurized dielectric elastomer balloon is subjected to additional electric actuation. A similar bifurcation condition is first deduced and then verified numerically by computing the bifurcated solutions explicitly. It is shown that when the material is an ideal dielectric elastomer, bifurcation into a pear shape is possible for all material models, and similar results are obtained when a typical non-ideal dielectric elastomer is considered. It is further shown that whenever a pear-shaped configuration is possible it has lower total energy than the co-existing spherical configuration.

Avoiding the pull-in instability of a dielectric elastomer film and the potential for increased actuation and energy harvesting.

Pull-in instability often occurs when a film of a dielectric elastomer is subjected to an electric field. In this work, we concoct a set of simple, experimentally implementable, conditions that render the dielectric elastomer film impervious to pull-in instability for all practical loading conditions. We show that a uniaxially pre-stretched film has a significantly large actuation stretch in th...

Large deformation and electromechanical instability of a dielectric elastomer tube actuator

This paper theoretically analyzes a dielectric elastomer tube actuator DETA . Subject to a voltage difference between the inner and outer surfaces, the actuator reduces in thickness and expands in length, so that the same voltage will induce an even higher electric field. This positive feedback may cause the actuator to thin down drastically, resulting in electrical breakdown. We obtain an anal...

Highly compliant transparent electrodes

Adaptive optical devices based on electric field induced deformation of dielectric elastomers require transparent and highly compliant electrodes to conform to large shape changes. Electrical, optical, and actuation properties of acrylic elastomer electrodes fabricated with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and silver nanowires (AgNWs) have been evaluated. Based on these properties, a fig...

High-performance electromechanical transduction using laterally-constrained dielectric elastomers part I: Actuation processes

A dielectric elastomer transducer is a deformable capacitor, and is under development as a sensor, actuator, or generator. Among various geometric configurations, laterallyconstrained transducer, also known as pure-shear transducer, is easy to implement and effective to couple mechanical force and electrical voltage. This analytical study reveals that lateral pre-stretch enhances actuation, far...

Study of leaky dielectric droplet behavior under an electric field: effect of viscosity and electric conductivity ratios

In this research, hydrodynamic behavior of a leaky dielectric droplet under an electric field is simulated. The level set method is used for interface tracking and the ghost fluid method is used for modeling discontinuous quantities at interface. Using Taylor’s leaky dielectric model, electric field and electric force at the interface is calculated. Simulation results show the droplet deformati...
