Random Graph Gauge Theories as Toy Models for Non-perturbative String Theories
نویسنده
چکیده
We present simple models which exhibit some of the remarkable features expected to hold for the yet unknown non-perturbative formulation of string theories. Among these are (1) the absence of a background or embedding space for the full theory, (2) perturbative ground states (local minima of the action) having the characteristics of spaces of different dimension, (3) duality transformations between large and small coupling expansions, and (4) perturbative excitations of these ground states which can be interpretated as string world sheets or p-brane world volumes. In this context we formulate gauge theories on arbitrary graphs and speculate about actions for graphs which in a continuum and/or thermodynamic limit might be related to the Einstein-Hilbert action. Static Mass Scales in Hot Gauge Theories
The static sectors of the electroweak Standard Model and QCD at finite temperatures are described by 3d SU(N) Higgs models with scalars in the fundamental and adjoint representation, respectively. I summarize the non-perturbative physics of these theories like mass spectrum, string tension, screening of the static potential and non-perturbative corrections to the Debye mass, as obtained from re...
متن کاملLectures on Perturbative String Theories
These lecture notes on String Theory constitute an introductory course designed to acquaint the students with some basic facts of perturbative string theories. They are intended as preparation for the more advanced courses on non-perturbative aspects of string theories in the school. The course consists of five lectures: 1. Bosonic String, 2. Toroidal Compactifications, 3. Superstrings, 4. Hete...
متن کاملA Perturbative Window into Non-Perturbative Physics
We argue that for a large class of N = 1 supersymmetric gauge theories the effective superpotential as a function of the glueball chiral superfield is exactly given by a summation of planar diagrams of the same gauge theory. This perturbative computation reduces to a matrix model whose action is the tree-level superpotential. For all models that can be embedded in string theory we give a proof ...
متن کاملNoncommutative Solitons and D-branes
D-branes are mysterious solitons in string theories and play crucial roles in the study of the non-perturbative aspects. Among many ways to analyze the properties of D-branes, gauge theoretical analysis often become very strong to study the dynamics especially at the low-energy scale. It is very interesting that gauge theories live on the D-branes are useful to study the D-branes themselves (ev...
متن کاملNew Perspectives on Yang-Mills Theories With Sixteen Supersymmetries
We describe various approaches that give matrix descriptions of compactified NS fivebranes. As a result, we obtain matrix models for Yang-Mills theories with sixteen supersymmetries in dimensions 2, 3, 4 and 5. The equivalence of the various approaches relates the Coulomb branch of certain gauge theories to the moduli space of instantons on T. We also obtain an equivalence between certain six-d...
