Warming of the arctic ice-ocean system is faster than the global average since the 1960s

چکیده
[1] Model results and observations both indicate warming of the world ocean from 1955 to 2003. Forced by reanalysis data, the model also shows that the warming of the arctic ice–ocean system is faster than the global average since the 1960s; there is a small but widespread increase in heat content of the Arctic Ocean’s waters and a larger increase of latent heat embodied in the ocean’s decreasing ice cover. From 1966 to 2003 the modeled mean world ocean temperature in the upper 700 m increased 0.097 C and by 0.137 C according to observations (Levitus et al., 2005); the modeled mean temperature adjusted for sea ice in the corresponding layer of the Arctic Ocean increased 0.203 C. The warming of the world ocean is associated with an increase in global surface air temperature, downward longwave radiation, and therefore net heat flux. The faster warming of the arctic ice–ocean system is associated with an amplified increase in arctic surface air temperature, downward longwave radiation, and net heat flux. Citation: Zhang, J. Interhemispheric asymmetry in transient global warming: The role of Drake Passage
[1] Climate models predict that the Northern Hemisphere (NH) will warm faster than the Southern Hemisphere (SH) in response to increasing greenhouse gases, and observations show that this trend has already begun to occur. This interhemispheric asymmetry has largely been attributed to land-ocean differences between the hemispheres and Arctic sea ice melt, while the role of ocean currents in sett...

Record amounts of the Arctic Ocean failed to freeze during the past winter, new figures show, spelling disaster for wildlife and strengthening concerns that the region is locked into a destructive cycle of irreversible climate change. Those wishing to deny global warming are increasingly faced by compelling evidence. Satellite measurements show the area covered by Arctic winter sea ice reached ...
متن کاملMethane excess in Arctic surface water- triggered by sea ice formation and melting
Arctic amplification of global warming has led to increased summer sea ice retreat, which influences gas exchange between the Arctic Ocean and the atmosphere where sea ice previously acted as a physical barrier. Indeed, recently observed enhanced atmospheric methane concentrations in Arctic regions with fractional sea-ice cover point to unexpected feedbacks in cycling of methane. We report on m...
متن کاملThe Role of Ocean–Atmosphere Coupling in the Zonal-Mean Atmospheric Response to Arctic Sea Ice Loss
The role of ocean–atmosphere coupling in the zonal-mean climate response to projected late twenty-firstcentury Arctic sea ice loss is investigated using Community Climate System Model version 4 (CCSM4) at 18 spatial resolution. Parallel experiments with different ocean model configurations (full-depth, slab, and no interactive ocean) allow the roles of dynamical and thermodynamic ocean feedback...
متن کاملThe Relation among Sea Ice, Surface Temperature, and Atmospheric Circulation in Simulations of Future Climate
Observations document substantial 20-40 year trends in the past several decades in the Arctic. Studies show sea ice thickness and extent have declined, air temperature has increased, and the temperature and salinity of the upper ocean have increased (e.g., see Serreze et al., 2000). At the same time, we have seen a weakening of the tropospheric anticyclone over the Beaufort Sea that can be asso...
