Polynomial approximation on the sphere using scattered data

We consider the problem of approximately reconstructing a function f defined on the surface of the unit sphere in the Euclidean space R, using samples of f at scattered sites. A central role is played by the construction of a new operator for polynomial approximation, which is a uniformly bounded quasi–projection in the de la Vallée Poussin style, i.e. it reproduces spherical polynomials up to a certain degree and has uniformly bounded L operator norm for 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞. Using certain positive quadrature rules for scattered sites due to Mhaskar, Narcowich and Ward, we discretize this operator obtaining a polynomial approximation of the target function which can be computed from scattered data and provides the same approximation degree of the best polynomial approximation. To establish the error estimates we use Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund inequalities, which we derive from our continuous approximating operator. For all the constants in the Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund inequalities as well as in the error estimates, we give concrete bounds. AMS Subject Classification(2000): 41A10, 33C55, 65D30.

Approximation on the sphere using radial basis functions plus polynomials
Abstract. In this paper we analyse a hybrid approximation of functions on the sphere S ⊂ R by radial basis functions combined with polynomials, with the radial basis functions assumed to be generated by a (strictly) positive definite kernel. The approximation is determined by interpolation at scattered data points, supplemented by side conditions on the coefficients to ensure a square linear sy...
متن کاملLocalized Linear Polynomial Operators on the Sphere
The purpose of this paper is to construct universal, auto–adaptive, localized, linear, polynomial (-valued) operators based on scattered data on the (hyper–)sphere Sq (q ≥ 2). The approximation and localization properties of our operators are studied theoretically in deterministic as well as probabilistic settings. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate their superiority over tradit...

The paper discusses the approximation of scattered data on the sphere which is one of the major tasks in geomathematics. Starting from the discretization of singular integrals on the sphere the authors devise a simple approximation method that employs locally supported spherical polynomials and does not require equidistributed grids. It is the basis for a hierarchical approximation algorithm us...
متن کاملFitting Scattered Data on Sphere-like Surfaces Using Spherical Splines
Spaces of polynomial splines deened on planar triangulations are very useful tools for tting scattered data in the plane. Recently, 4, 5], using homogeneous polynomials, we have developed analogous spline spaces deened on triangulations on the sphere and on sphere-like surfaces. Using these spaces, it is possible to construct analogs of many of the classical interpolation and tting methods. Her...
