Running head: EXPECTING TO TEACH 1 Expecting to Teach Enhances Learning and Organization of Knowledge in Free Recall of Text Passages
نویسندگان
چکیده
The present research assessed potential effects of expecting to teach on learning. In two experiments, participants studied passages either in preparation for a later test or in preparation to teach the passage to another student who would then be tested. In reality, all participants were tested and no one actually engaged in teaching. Participants expecting to teach produced more complete and better organized free recall of the passage (Experiment 1) and, in general, correctly answered more questions about the passage than did participants expecting a test (Experiment 1), particularly questions covering main points (Experiment 2), consistent with their having engaged in more effective learning strategies. Instilling an expectation to teach thus seems to be a simple, inexpensive intervention with the potential to increase learning efficiency at home and in the classroom.

متن کاملTest-expectancy and semantic-organization effects in recall and recognition
Two experiments examined whether people expecting recall are, compared with people expecting recognition, more likely to form associations between semantically related words in a list of to-be-remembered words. People were induced to expect either a recall or a recognition test on a critical list that included three conditions of semantic organization. Words in the unrelated (U) condition were ...
متن کاملThe Effects of Glossing Conventions on L2 Vocabulary Recognition and Production
To investigate the effects of different glossing conventions on vocabulary recognition and recall, 158 participants were given a pre-test to make sure that they did not have any prior knowledge of the target words. Reading passages with four different glossing conventions (interlinear, marginal, pre-text, and post-text) were given to eight groups. Four groups received interlingual glosses and f...
متن کاملWe must teach more effectively: here are four ways to get started
Research on how people learn shows that teaching using active learning is more effective than just lecturing. We outline four concrete ways instructors can begin to apply active learning in their teaching: backward instruction design; expecting students to learn more than facts; posing "messy" problems for students to solve; and expecting students to talk, write, and collaborate. Each tactic is...
متن کامل3-D computed tomography reconstruction: another tool to teach anatomy in the veterinary colleges
This letter underpins the use of three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) reconstruction as an aid to teach veterinary anatomy. Cases were presented to students in order to observe normal and clinically abnormal patients. The images provided excellent details of relevant structures and could serve as a tool for teaching anatomy. Many sources describe different options to enhance anatomical...
