Predictive coding and the Bayesian brain: Intractability hurdles that are yet to be overcome

چکیده
Introduction An influential conjecture in neuroscience states that a brain organized according to principles of hierarchical predictive coding (HPC) can effectively and efficiently perform genuine Bayesian inferences, providing a neurally plausible account of how Bayesian models of cogntion may be physically implemented in the brain. However, each key subcomputation invoked in HPC potentially hides a computationally intractable problem. We identify ways in which computational modelers may or may not overcome these ‘intractability hurdles.’ Figure 1. A schematic depiction of the way in which the top-down chain (left) and the bottom-up chain (right) in the HPC framework interact. The red arrows are labeled by the key computational transformations PREDICTION, ERROR COMPUTATION and HYPOTHESIS UPDATING.

When Can Predictive Brains be Truly Bayesian?
tive coding framework does not yet make stringent commitments as to the nature of the causal models that the brain can represent. Hence, contrary to suggestions by Clark (in press), the framework does not yet have the virtue that it effectively implements tractable Bayesian inference. At this point in time three mutually exclusive options remain open: either predictive coding does not implement...
متن کاملA Moving Avarage Variation Control Chart based on Bayesian Predictive Density
Recently several control charts have been introduced in the statistical process control literature which are based on the idea of Bayesian Predictive Density (BPD). Among these charts is the variation control chart which we refer to it as VBPD chart. In this paper we add the idea of Moving Average to VBPD chart and introduce a new variation control chart which has all advantages of the ...
متن کاملBayesian prediction of rotational torque to operate horizontal drilling
Horizontal directional drilling is usually used in drilling engineering. In a variety of conditions, it is necessary to predict the torque required for performing the drilling operation. Nevertheless, there is presently not a convenient method available to accomplish this task. In order to overcome this difficulty, the current work aims at predicting the required rotational torque (RT) to opera...
متن کاملWhy does the central nervous system not regenerate after injury?
A major problem for neuroscientists and clinicians is why the central nervous system shows ineffective regeneration after injury. Injured peripheral nerve fibers reform their connections, whereas those in injured spinal cord never re-grow. Insights into the mechanisms for repair and restoration of function after spinal cord injury have been obtained by experiments showing that injured nerve cel...
