چکیده

The assay of serum enzymes has been used increasingly in recent years as an aid to clinical diagnosis and prognosis, but the literature contains few references to the exploitation of these laboratory tests in paediatrics. Following the development in these laboratories of assay procedures for glutamate-oxalacetate transaminase (GO-T), glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GP-T), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH) suited to routine work, the determination of the normal serum activities of these enzymes in the neonatal period was undertaken in conjunction with an investigation of the usefulness of their estimation in haemolytic disease of the newborn. The transaminase enzymes form a link between protein and carbohydrate metabolism and mediate in the reactions shown in equations (i) and (ii).

Significance of "high" acid phosphatase activity in the serum of normal children.

Serum acid phosphatase activity in normal children (newborn to 18 years) is several fold that in normal adults. Activity is age-related but not sex-related. The isoenzyme pattern in children is similar to that in adults and contains no prostatic fraction. Quantitatively, most of the enzyme activity in the serum of children is tartrate-resistant and correlates well with heat-labile fractions of ...

Serum enzyme activity in prematurity and in haemolytic disease of the newborn.

In a concurrent study of the serum activity of glutamate-oxalacetate transaminase (GO-T), glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GP-T), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH) in normal newborn infants ranges of normal values for these enzymes have been defined (King and Morris, 1961). In the present report the activity of these enzymes in relation to neonatal jaundice and in prema...

Group B Streptococcal Sepsis in a Newborn: a Case Report

Newborns’ bacterial infections due to group B Streptococcus (GBS) happen in two forms including early-onset disease or late-onset disease. In this paper, we report a case of early-onset GBS infection in a male infant. A 22-year-old primigravid woman delivers a term normal looking male infant. Nasal flaring, grunting, and poor feeding presented soon after birth. An empiric treatment wit...

Cord y glutamyl transpeptidase activity and neonatal jaundice. y Glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) activity was measured in normal neonates and in maternal serum post partum. Levels were above the normal adult range (35I U/l) in all neonates and a significant correlation was found between enzyme act...
