The safety and efficacy of sotalol in the management of acute atrial fibrillation: a retrospective case control study
نویسنده
چکیده
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and affects 1.5-2% of the population [1]. Over 6 million Europeans have AF and the prevalence is expected to double in the next 50 years [2]. AF is associated with increased risk of stroke, heart failure, impaired quality of life, reduced exercise tolerance, left ventricular systolic impairment and death. Subsequently there is significant cost implications associated [1,2]. Attempting to achieve sinus rhythm is therefore of importance. Objective: The European Society of Cardiology, American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology guidelines on atrial fibrillation (AF) 2006 state that Sotalol should not be used in acute AF. We assessed the safety and efficacy of sotalol in acute AF when compared to other anti-arrhythmic drugs (ADD).

متن کاملAcute direct effects of cyclosporine on extracellular field potential of isolated rabbit AV node during experimental atrial fibrillation
Introduction: Previous studies have indicated a relationship between MPTP pore and AV nodal rate-dependent properties. The aim of present study was to determine acute direct effects of cyclosporine on extracellular field potential of isolated rabbit AV node during experimental atrial fibrillation. Methods: In one group of male New Zealand rabbits (1.5-2.5 kg) cumulative concentrations of cyc...
متن کاملClinical Significance of P Wave Dispersion in Prediction of Atrial Fibrillation in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction
Background: P wave dispersion (PWD) is defined as the difference between the maximum P wave duration (Pmax) and the minimum P wave duration (Pmin) in 12-leads of the surface electrocardiography. The aim of this study was to evaluate the values of PWD during atrial fibrillation (AF) after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods: We prospectively evaluated atrial rhythms of 350 patients (251 m...
متن کاملProtective effects of simvastatin on atrioventricular node during simulated experimental atrial fibrillation in vitro
Introduction: Recent evidence has indicated that statins can reduce the incidence of both supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias with various mechanisms. The primary goal of the present study was to determine direct protective role of simvastatin in modifying concealed conduction and the zone of concealment in a simulated model of atrial fibrillation (AF) in an isolated atrioventricula...

Background: Atrial fibrillation is the most common but benign arrhythmia following cardiac surgery. Although this arrhythmia is often self-limited and vanishes in about 24 hours upon surgery a number of arrhythmias might ensue among which some might be really life-threatening. A multitude of therapeutic modalities have been proposed for the prevention of this arrhythmia and one of them is poste...
