GHG emissions from international shipping and aviation
ثبت نشده
چکیده
International shipping accounts for about 2 percent of annual global CO2 emissions. Aviation annually contributes to approximately 3.5 percent of the total human climate change effects, taking into account that several emissions from planes contribute. The emissions occur outside national control, and need broad international cooperation to be curbed. Voluntary agreements and technical standards are the most promising policy instruments towards these emissions in the short and medium term. Emission reductions beyond the standard could in the longer run form a basis for emissions credits that could be sold to land-based emission sources. Carbon taxes would not be a viable option due to huge evasion possibilities. Emissions trading would for the same reason not be viable for shipping, but should be considered for aviation as part of an international emission trading system for land-based sources.

Life-cycle analysis of greenhouse gas emissions from renewable jet fuel production
BACKGROUND The introduction of renewable jet fuel (RJF) is considered an important emission mitigation measure for the aviation industry. This study compares the well-to-wake (WtWa) greenhouse gas (GHG) emission performance of multiple RJF conversion pathways and explores the impact of different co-product allocation methods. The insights obtained in this study are of particular importance if R...

BACKGROUND To reduce the environmental impacts of the aviation sector as air traffic grows steadily, the aviation industry has paid increasing attention to bio-based alternative jet fuels (AJFs), which may provide lower life-cycle petroleum consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than petroleum jet fuel. This study presents well-to-wake (WTWa) results for four emerging AJFs: ethanol-to-j...
متن کاملOptimal crop management can reduce energy use and greenhouse gases emissions in rainfed canola production
Energy use and greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions in rainfed canola production in north eastern Iran were analyzed to find measures to reduce energy use and GHG emissions. Four production scenarios, i.e. a high-input, a low-input, a better crop management and a usual scenario, evaluated. All activities and production processes were monitored and recorded over three consecutive years. The usua...
متن کاملGreenhouse gas emissions from flying can offset the gain from reduced driving in dense urban areas
Numerous studies have illustrated how denser urban forms lead to smaller greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from passenger transport. Many of these studies have excluded aviation since the association between urban structure and air travel is not as intuitive as it is the case of ground travel. However, several recent studies have concluded that air travel is a significant contributor to the GHGs f...
متن کاملField to Flight: A techno-Economic analysis of the Corn Stover to Aviation Biofuels Supply Chain
The United States Environmental Protection Agency reports that the transportation sector is responsible for 32% of the total CO2 emissions from combustion of fossil fuels. In 2012, it contributed 27% of total US GHG emissions (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). As a result, there has been a focus on producing biofuels for the transportation sector as a way to reduce GHG emissions. In 2011, ...
