Scaling and intermittency in incoherent α–shear dynamo

چکیده
We consider mean-field dynamo models with fluctuating α effect, both with and without largescale shear. The α effect is chosen to be Gaussian white noise with zero mean and a given covariance. In the presence of shear, we show analytically that (in infinitely large domains) the mean-squared magnetic field shows exponential growth. The growth rate of the fastest growing mode is proportional to the shear rate. This result agrees with earlier numerical results of Yousef et al. and the recent analytical treatment by Heinemann, McWilliams & Schekochihin who use a method different from ours. In the absence of shear, an incoherent α2 dynamo may also be possible. We further show by explicit calculation of the growth rate of thirdand fourth-order moments of the magnetic field that the probability density function of the mean magnetic field generated by this dynamo is non-Gaussian.

Crisis-induced intermittency in truncated mean field dynamos
We investigate the detailed dynamics of a truncated αω dynamo model with a dynamic α effect. We find the presence of multiple attractors, including two chaotic attractors with a fractal basin boundary which merge to form a single attractor as the control parameter is increased. By considering phase portraits and the scaling of averaged times of transitions between the two attractors, we demonst...
متن کاملDynamo efficiency with shear in helical turbulence
To elucidate the influence of shear flow on the generation of magnetic field (the dynamo effect), we study the kinematic limit where the magnetic field does not backreact on the velocity field. By non-perturbatively incorporating the effect of shear in a helically forced turbulence, we show that turbulence intensity and turbulent transport coefficients (turbulent viscosity, α and β effect) are ...
متن کاملMagnetic Diffusivity Tensor and Dynamo Effects in Rotating and Shearing Turbulence
The turbulent magnetic diffusivity tensor is determined in the presence of rotation or shear. The question is addressed whether dynamo action from the shear–current effect can explain large-scale magnetic field generation found in simulations with shear. For this purpose a set of evolution equations for the response to imposed test fields is solved with turbulent and mean motions calculated fro...
متن کاملAn Incoherent Dynamo in Accretion Disks
We use the mean-eld dynamo equations to show that spatially and temporally incoherent uctuations in the helicity in mirror-symmetric turbulence in a shearing ow can generate a large scale, coherent magnetic eld. We illustrate this eeect with simulations of a few simple systems. For statistically homogeneous turbulence we nd that the dynamo growth rate is roughly ?2=3 eddy ?1=3 shear N ?1=3 eddy...
متن کاملCrisis-Induced intermittency due to Attractor-Widening in a Buoyancy-Driven Solar dynamo
In a recent paper [M. A. J. H. Ossendrijver, A&A 359, 364 (2000)] numerical simulations of a 2D mean–field model where shown to produce grand minima, typical of the long-term behavior of solar magnetic activity. The model consisted of dynamo that features an α effect based on the buoyancy instability of magnetic fluxtubes, which gives rise to the switching back and forth from grand minima to “r...
