Plant Biodiversity and Responses to Elevated Carbon Dioxide

چکیده
The general assumption, in the first phase of elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) research, was that increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration would act as a fertilizer for plant systems. Under this “large-plant-scenario” (Fig. 9.1), increased photosynthesis at elevated CO2 would lead to higher plant biomass which would induce a negative atmospheric feedback loop that would offset anthropogenic carbon (C) emissions. A second general assumption in early research was that the effects of elevated CO2 on plant community structure could be predicated using a C-based perspective with clear “winners” and “losers” based on species’ ability to take advantage of the increased atmospheric CO2 concentration (e.g., plant with C3 vs. C4 photosynthetic pathways). The reality unveiled by a decade of research proved more complex and the “large plant scenario” largely untenable.

Seven C3 crop and three C3 weed species were grown from seed at 360 and at 700 cm3 m–3 carbon dioxide concentrations in a controlled environment chamber to compare dry mass, relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR), leaf area ratio (LAR) and photosynthetic acclimation at ambient and elevated carbon dioxide. The dry mass at the final harvest at elevated carbon dioxide relative to ...
متن کاملSimulated Impact of Global Climatic Change on the Geographic Distribution of Plant Diversity
Elevated concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (pCO2) are likely to lead to substantial warming in the coming century with altered hydrological regimes, thereby affecting the distribution of plant species. Here I use an individual-based modeling approach to plant diversity to estimate the impact of global climatic change on the geographic distribution of plant diversity. Differences in t...
متن کاملEffects of Elevated Carbon Dioxide on Photosynthesis and Carbon Partitioning: A Perspective on Root Sugar Sensing and Hormonal Crosstalk
Plant responses to atmospheric carbon dioxide will be of great concern in the future, as carbon dioxide concentrations ([CO2]) are predicted to continue to rise. Elevated [CO2] causes increased photosynthesis in plants, which leads to greater production of carbohydrates and biomass. Which organ the extra carbohydrates are allocated to varies between species, but also within species. These carbo...
متن کاملAdditive effects of simulated climate changes, elevated CO2, and nitrogen deposition on grassland diversity.
Biodiversity responses to ongoing climate and atmospheric changes will affect both ecosystem processes and the delivery of ecosystem goods and services. Combined effects of co-occurring global changes on diversity, however, are poorly understood. We examined plant diversity responses in a California annual grassland to manipulations of four global environmental changes, singly and in combinatio...
