Mercury chemistry of brominated activated carbons – Packed-bed breakthrough experiments

چکیده
Coal-fired power plants provided between 45% and 50% of the United States net energy generation in the years between 1999 and 2010 and will continue to be a primary source of electricity into the future. Among the major environmental concerns of coal utilization is the release of mercury (Hg), which was recently regulated by the US EPA in the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) ruling in December 2011. Among the variety of potential methods for Hg capture, activated carbon injection (ACI) is viewed by the EPA as a viable, ready technology available to energy utilities to comply with MATS. However, there remain significant questions regarding the complicated interaction between the carbon sorbent, Hg, and contaminants present in combustion flue gas, such as SO2 and NOx (NO and NO2). In this study, bromine-impregnated carbon fiber (Br-ACF) was tested for Hg capture and oxidation in a controlled flue gas environment to elucidate trends in the interaction of the flue gas components. These results are compared with prior surface analysis results from this group to provide additional support to prior conclusions. Compared to baseline capture rates in a clean environment, results indicate that NOx promotes the oxidation of Hg, while SO2 prevents the adsorption or oxidation of Hg on the Br-ACF. 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Comparison of Adsorption Properties of Activated Carbons with Different Crops Residues as Precursors for Gold Cyanide Recovery: An Iranian Gold Industry Guide
Adsorption of gold cyanide on three types of Activated Carbons (ACs) has been investigated in batch and column adsorption conditions. Applied ACs have been derived from different crops precursors i.e., coconut shell (CAC), peach stone (PAC), and walnut shell (WAC). As peach stone and walnut shells are abundant agricultural residues in Iran, the activated carbons produced from these precurso...

Activated carbons are universal adsorbents that can be obtained from a wide variety of raw materials, and have been found to be very effective for mercury removal from water. This contribution presents a comparative adsorption in column study of activated carbons obtained by physical activation of carbonized eucalyptus wood with water vapour, as adsorbents of mercury in liquid phase. Two sampl...

The main objective of this research is stability determination of activated carbon adsorbent at fixed bed adsorption column for desulfurization of diesel fuel by mathematical modeling. This model is based on mass balances. Equations that are the outcome of mass balances are known as the second degree of partial differential equations, and they must be solved together simultaneously...
متن کاملImpact of sulfur oxides on mercury capture by activated carbon.
Recent field tests of mercury removal with activated carbon injection (ACI) have revealed that mercury capture is limited in flue gases containing high concentrations of sulfur oxides (SOx). In order to gain a more complete understanding of the impact of SOx on ACl, mercury capture was tested under varying conditions of SO2 and SO3 concentrations using a packed bed reactor and simulated flue ga...
