چکیده

A class of preferential orderings in non-monotonic logics assumes that various extensions of a model (possible worlds) can be ordered based on both their likelihood and desirability. I suggest that there is a basic incompatibility between this qualitative notion of preference and the decision-theoretic notion of utility. I demonstrate that while reasoning and decision making in the former can focus on a single state, it is meaningless in expected utility theory to say that a state or a set of states is important for a decision. This, I believe, is thought-provoking as it poses the question whether a qualitative formalism should be compatible with its quantitative counterpart or whether it can a ord to be at odds with it. I discuss the di erence between normative and cognitive utility and the implications of this di erence for work on user interfaces to systems based on probabilistic and decision-theoretic methods.

Modeling Deliberation in Teamwork

Cooperation in multi-agent systems essentially hinges on appropriate communication. This paper shows how to model communication in teamwork within TEAMLOG, the first multi-modal framework wholly capturing a methodology for working together. Taking off from the dialogue theory ofWalton and Krabbe, the paper focuses on deliberation, the main type of dialogue during team planning. We provide a fou...

Appears in Working Notes of the AAAI Spring Symposium on Computational Models for Mixed - initiative Interaction Stanford , CA , March 1997

We are developing mixed-initiative systems that provide users with exible control over evolving processes. For such systems to be feasible, both users and automated agents must be able to operate at multiple levels of abstraction. We are designing mixed initiative systems organized around shared task models to achieve this multi-level task sharing. These task models will allow both human and au...

Identifying Sustainable Designs Using Preferences over Sustainability Attributes

We consider the problem of assessing the sustainability of alternative designs (e.g., for an urban environment) that are assembled from multiple components (e.g., water supply, transportation system, shopping centers, commercial spaces, parks). We model the sustainability of a design in terms of a set of sustainability attributes. Given the (qualitative) preferences and tradeoffs of decision ma...
