The influence of a mono-directional PTO on a self-contained inertial WEC

چکیده
This paper looks at the effect that a mono-directional Power Take Off (PTO) has on the motions and power extraction of a Wave Energy Converter (WEC). A monodirectional damper is one where the resisting force only operates in one direction. The model comprises of a cylinder that is restrained to move in heave, reacting against an internal mass (also limited to move in heave) that is connected to the cylinder by a spring and monodirectional damper in parallel. This paper presents experimental results for a variety of different damping constants for mono-directional dampers which operate in both in expansion and compression. The response amplitude operators to monochromatic waves for both the cylinder, the internal mass and the relative motion between them are presented. A Pierson Moskowitz spectrum is used to look at the effect of an irregular sea state and the power extraction is calculated from this spectrum. The results show a greater response of the cylinder, but also in certain cases the internal mass and relative motion, when a mono-directional damper is present than when there is no damper. It is postulated by the authors that this is due to a “latching” effect. This increase in motion results in a greater than expected power extraction.

متن کاملDiscrete Displacement Hydraulic Power Take-Off System for the Wavestar Wave Energy Converter
The Wavestar Wave Energy Converter (WEC) is a multiple absorber concept, consisting of 20 hemisphere shaped floats attached to a single platform. The heart of the Wavestar WEC is the Power Take-Off (PTO) system, converting the wave induced motion of the floats into a steady power output to the grid. In the present work, a PTO based on a novel discrete displacement fluid power technology is expl...
متن کاملLatching and Declutching Control of the Solo Duck Wave-Energy Converter with Different Load Types
The solo duck wave-energy converter (WEC) captures power in a point absorber manner, hence it exhibits high power-capture efficiency within only a narrow bandwidth. Passive control is characterized by a unidirectional power flow, and thus its engineering implementation can be simplified. In this paper, two typical passive control strategies, latching and declutching control, are applied to the ...
متن کاملOn the concept of sloped motion for free-floating wave energy converters
A free-floating wave energy converter (WEC) concept whose power take-off (PTO) system reacts against water inertia is investigated herein. The main focus is the impact of inclining the PTO direction on the system performance. The study is based on a numerical model whose formulation is first derived in detail. Hydrodynamics coefficients are obtained using the linear boundary element method pack...

Numerical models for wave energy converters (WECs) are utilized in a number areas within the design process. These include, but are not limited to, performance assessment, control design, and survival analysis. Thus, the accuracy of such a model is paramount to design of a WEC. WEC dynamic models can take a number of forms. At the most basic level, the model should capture the rigidbody dynamic...
