Title On the origin of X-ray emission from millisecond pulsars in 47 Tucanae
نویسندگان
چکیده
The observed spectra and X-ray luminosities of millisecond pulsars in 47 Tuc can be interpreted in the context of theoretical models based on strong, small-scale, multipole fields on the neutron star surface. For multipole fields that are relatively strong compared to the large-scale dipole field, the emitted X-rays are thermal and likely result from polar cap heating associated with the return current from the polar gap. On the other hand, for weak multipole fields, the emission is nonthermal and results from synchrotron radiation of e pairs created by curvature radiation. The X-ray luminosity LX is related to the spin-down power Lsd, expressed in the form LX / L sd with 0:5 and 1 for strong and weak multipole fields, respectively. If the polar cap size is of the order of the length scale of the multipole field s, the polar cap temperature is 3 106 KðLsd=10 ergs s 1Þðs=3 104 cmÞ . A comparison of the X-ray properties of millisecond pulsars in globular clusters and in the Galactic field suggests that the emergence of relatively strong smallscale multipole fields from the neutron star interior may be correlated with the age and evolutionary history of the underlying neutron star. New observational constraints on hard X-/γ-ray millisecond pulsar emission from 47 Tucanae
Recent X-/γ-ray observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) of 47 Tuc (NGC 104) are used to compare different models of millisecond pulsar emission. Data from both the Proportional Counter Array and the High Energy X-ray Timing Experiment are presented, covering a total energy range of 2–250 keV. A new upper limit on the hard X-/γ-ray emission from 47 Tuc is set, suggesting that th...
متن کاملVariability of 19 Millisecond Pulsars in 47 Tucanae with Chandra Hrc-s
We present results from our 830 ks observation of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae with the Chandra X-ray Observatory’sHigh Resolution Camera-S. We limit our analysis here to the 19 previously known, localized millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in the cluster. This work more than doubles the sample of X-rayYdetected MSPs observed with sensitivity to rotational variability; it is also the first survey of...
متن کاملAn X-ray Variable Millisecond Pulsar in the Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae: Closing the Link to Low Mass X-ray Binaries
We report the discovery of peculiar X-ray spectral variability in the binary radio millisecond pulsar PSR J0024–7204W in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. The observed emission consists of a dominant non-thermal component, which is eclipsed for a portion of the orbit, and a thermal component, which appears to be persistent. We propose that the non-thermal X-rays originate in a relativistic intra...
متن کاملChandra X-ray Observations of Nineteen Millisecond Pulsars in the Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae
We present spectral and long-timescale variability analyses of Chandra X-ray Observatory ACISS observations of the 19 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) with precisely known positions in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. The X-ray emission of the majority of these MSPs is well described by a thermal (blackbody or neutron star hydrogen atmosphere) spectrum with a temperature Teff ∼ (1 − 3)× 10 K, emissio...
متن کاملOptical Detection of a Variable Millisecond Pulsar Companion in 47 Tucanae
Using results from radio and X-ray observations of millisecond pulsars in 47 Tucanae, and extensive HST U, V, I imaging of the globular cluster core, we have derived a common astrometric solution good to < 0. 1. A close positional coincidence is found for 47 Tuc U, a 4.3ms pulsar in a 0.429 day orbit, detected in radio and X-rays, with an mV = 20.9 blue star. Analysis of extensive time series d...
