Complex adaptive systems in ecology and evolution

چکیده

Mitigating and managing anthropogenic impacts on ecosystems and their services poses a variety of important challenges: modern approaches to understanding such complex adaptive systems and their interactions with human interventions need to account for nonlinear feedbacks, discontinuities and break points, non-equilibrium dynamics, collective phenomena, systemic transitions, behavioral dynamics, as well as multi-level and multi-scale interactions among processes and agents. Ecology is the quintessential systems science, dealing with these challenges in a holistic way. The four projects offered below enable SA-YSSP participants with backgrounds in biology, physics, mathematics, economics, or computer science to become part of exciting developments and topical research at the forefront of this burgeoning field.

Connections, Communication and Collaboration in Healthcare’s Complex Adaptive Systems; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”

A more sophisticated understanding of the unpredictable, disorderly and unstable aspects of healthcare organisations is developing in the knowledge translation (KT) literature. In an article published in this journal, Kitson et al introduced a new model for KT in healthcare based on complexity theory. The Knowledge Translation Complexity Network Model (KTCNM) provides a fresh perspective by mak...

Ecology and Society: The Evolution of an Ecosystem Approach: the Diamond...atic and an Adaptive Methodology for Ecosystem Sustainability and Health

Over the past 15 yr, an international network of researchers has developed and tested a methodology for integrating complex systems theories into sustainable development projects. Drawing on our best theoretical understanding of complex systems and combining it with best practices of community engagement drawn from a wide variety of sources, we have developed a methodology that is theoretically...

Fractal Population Ecology Theory

Abstract Purpose - The aim of this paper is to describe the population ecology theory through fractal thinking, an emergent human operating system that is creative, adaptive, healthy, and evolutionary; furthermore, a parallel is drawn between the population ecology model and the fractal structure. Top-down hierarchies are typically characterized by command and control systems of the authority t...

The Paradox of Intervening in Complex Adaptive Systems; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”

This commentary addresses two points raised by Kitson and colleagues’ article. First, increasing interest in applying the Complexity Theory lens in healthcare needs further systematic work to create some commonality between concepts used. Second, our need to adopt a better understanding of how these systems organise so we can change the systems overall behaviour, creates a paradox. We seek to m...

Complex Adaptive Systems: Exploring the Known, the Unknown and the Unknowable

The study of complex adaptive systems, from cells to societies, is a study of the interplay among processes operating at diverse scales of space, time and organizational complexity. The key to such a study is an understanding of the interrelationships between microscopic processes and macroscopic patterns, and the evolutionary forces that shape systems. In particular, for ecosystems and socioec...
