Nonnegativity, Reducibility, and Semistability of Mass Action Kinetics

Mass action kinetics are used throughout the chemical and chemical engineering literature to describe the dynamics of systems of chemical reaction laws. They are also a special form of compartmental systems that involve mass balance relations [l]. Aside from their obvious importance in chemical engineering applications, mass action kinetics have numerous analytical properties that are of inhere...

On global stability of the Lotka reactions with generalized mass-action kinetics

Chemical reaction networks with generalized mass-action kinetics lead to power-law dynamical systems. As a simple example, we consider the Lotka reactions with two chemical species and arbitrary power-law kinetics. We study existence, uniqueness, and stability of the positive equilibrium, in particular, we characterize its global asymptotic stability in terms of the kinetic orders.

Graph-theoretic criteria for injectivity and unique equilibria in general chemical reaction systems.

In this paper we discuss the question of how to decide when a general chemical reaction system is incapable of admitting multiple equilibria, regardless of parameter values such as reaction rate constants, and regardless of the type of chemical kinetics, such as mass-action kinetics, Michaelis-Menten kinetics, etc. Our results relate previously described linear algebraic and graph-theoretic con...

On the Mathematical Structure of Balanced Chemical Reaction Networks Governed by Mass Action Kinetics

Motivated by recent progress on the interplay between graph theory, dynamics, and systems theory, we revisit the analysis of chemical reaction networks described by mass action kinetics. For reaction networks possessing a thermodynamic equilibrium we derive a compact formulation exhibiting at the same time the structure of the complex graph and the stoichiometry of the network, and which admits...

Contributions to the Theory of Mass A ction Kinetics III. Some Dynamic Properties of Second Order Mass Action Kinetics

Mass action kinetics whose elementary reactions are of at most second order provide the simplest models of nonlinear chemical systems. Despite their simplicity, however, only few7 investigations deal with second order mass action kinetics in a system atic and general setting. In [1] Aris showed the connection between these kinetics and certain nonassociative algebras. Jenks [2, 3] studied gene...
