Model calculations for wetting transitions in polymer mixtures

چکیده
2014 Partially compatible binary mixtures of linear flexible polymers are considered in the presence of a wall which preferentially adsorbs one component. Using a Flory-Huggins type mean field approach, it is shown that in typical cases at two-phase coexistence the wall is always « wet », i.e. coated with a macroscopically thick layer of the preferred phase, and the transition to the non wet state occurs at volume fractions of the order of 1/~N (where N is the chain length) at the coexistence curve. Both first and second order wetting transitions are found, and the variation of the surface layer thickness, surface excess energy and related quantities through the transition is studied. We discuss both the validity of the long wavelength approximation involved in our treatment, and possible fluctuation effects for « critical wetting », comparing our results to Monte Carlo simulations of wetting in Ising models. The relation of our results to previous work and possible experimental consequences are also briefly mentioned. J. Physique 46 (1985) 1631-1644 OCTOBRE 1985,

A self-consistent field study of the wetting transition in binary polymer blends
A self-consistent field approach is used to investigate the partial to complete wetting transition for an A:B polymer blend at coexistence where polymers A and B have equal numbers of segments, N. The surface free energy, Fs , is modeled using the quadratic form suggested by Schmidt and Binder J. Phys. II France 46, 1631 1985 , namely, Fs 1 0.5g 1 , where and g are the surface equivalents of th...
متن کاملMultiple Glass Transitions and Local Composition Effects on Polymer Solvent Mixtures
Recent differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results on polystyrene–solvent mixtures show two distinct glass transitions whose positions and widths vary with composition. Parallel work on the dynamic response in polymer blends has focused on how segmental mobilities are controlled by local composition variations within a ‘‘cooperative volume’’ containing the segment. Such variations arise fro...
متن کاملWetting, drying, and layering of colloid-polymer mixtures at porous interfaces.
The influence of interface porosity on the wetting properties of colloid-polymer mixtures is studied within density functional theory for the Asakura-Oosawa-Vrij model at the surface of a quenched hard-sphere matrix. While the porosity hardly changes the location of the transition from partial to complete wetting at colloidal bulk gas-liquid coexistence, the onset of wetting, as signaled by the...
متن کاملEntropic wetting and many-body induced layering in a model colloid-polymer mixture.
We develop an efficient simulation scheme to study a model suspension of equally sized colloidal hard spheres and nonadsorbing ideal polymer coils, both in bulk and adsorbed against a planar hard wall. The many-body character of the polymer-mediated effective interactions between the colloids yields a bulk phase diagram and adsorption phenomena that differ substantially from those found for pai...
متن کاملWetting transitions in a cylindrical pore.
The wetting behavior of two-phase systems confined inside cylindrical pores is studied theoretically. The confined geometry gives rise to wetting configurations, or microstructures, which have no analog in the wellstudied planar case. Many features observed in experiments on binary liquid mixtures in porous media, previously interpreted in terms of random fields, are shown to be consistent with...
