Rapid therapeutic response to anodal tDCS of right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in acute mania.

چکیده
Transcranial direct current stimulation is a method of noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) that has been intensively investigated in the last few years [1,2]. In tDCS, a weak and continuous electrical current over the scalp is applied for several minutes. If electrodes are appropriately placed and adequate parameters of stimulation are used, tDCS changes cortical excitability significantly [3]. Given the modulatory effects of tDCS, this method has been tested for mood disorders such as major depression [5,6] and bipolar disorder [6]. Although tDCS has been used for the treatment of bipolar patients, it has been used to treat depression rather than mania symptoms. Given the positive effects of other techniques of non-invasive brain stimulation for the treatment of mania such as rTMS and these initial results of tDCS for mood modulation; it is conceivable that tDCS can also induce significant reduction in symptoms of mania. Based on the neurophysiological effects of anodal stimulation and initial evidence suggesting that high frequency rTMS over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex might induce reduce mania symptoms [7e9], we applied 5 sessions of anodal tDCS over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex as an off-label treatment for a patient with an episode of mania with sexual hyperactivity.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation of Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex in Patients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder to Improve Decision Making and Reduce Obsession Symptoms
Objective: Recent studies on treating obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) have investigated noninvasive brain stimulation techniques such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to improve patients’ impaired emotion and cognition. However, such experiments have yielded mixed results, especially with respect to cognition. This study aimed to investigate whethe...
متن کاملNormal Electrical Activity of the Brain in Obsessive-Compulsive Patients After Anodal Stimulation of the Left Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex
Introduction: Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) has been used as a non-invasive method to increase the plasticity of brain. Growing evidence has shown several brain disorders such as depression, anxiety disorders, and chronic pain syndrome are improved following tDCS. In patients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), increased brain rhythm activity particularly in the frontal l...
متن کاملNo Effect of Cathodal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Fear Memory in Healthy Human Subjects
BACKGROUND Studies have demonstrated that fear memories can be modified using non-invasive methods. Recently, we demonstrated that anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is capable of enhancing fear memories. Here, we examined the effects of cathodal tDCS of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex during fear reconsolidation in humans....
متن کاملEnhancement of Visuospatial Working Memory by Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) on Prefrontal and Parietal Cortices
Objective: Previous studies have reported dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and posterior parietal (PPC) activation during the performance of spatial working memory (SWM), so we decided to investigate the comparison of Transcranial Direct current stimulation (tDCS) effect between these two areas. Methods: Fifty-four healthy right-handed students (27 female, 27 male; age= 24.3±.2 years) w...
متن کاملModulation of Drug Craving in Crystalline-Heroin Users by Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation of Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex
Background: Drug craving, the main cause of relapse and a major motivator for drug use, is a challenging obstacle in substance use treatment. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive neuromodulatory technique, has shown promising outcomes in treating different neuropsychiatric disorders such as drug addiction, more specifically on drug craving. The aim in the current study...
