Size-dependent changes in the electronic structure of metal clusters as investigated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

چکیده

Pd, Ag, Cd and Au clusters of varying sizes have been investigated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy under ultra-high vacuum. The conductance of the clusters decreases markedly when the cluster diameter is F1 nm. A plot of the density of 3 Ž . states at the Fermi level against the cluster volume varies nearly linearly up to a cluster volume of 4 nm diameter ;2 nm . Below a cluster diameter of 1 nm, an energy gap occurs, the value of which increases with the decrease in cluster size, reaching values up to 70 meV at small sizes. Clearly, the very small clusters tend to become non-metallic. q 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Effect of the strong metal-support interaction on hydrogen sorption kinetics of Pd-capped switchable mirrors

The morphology and electronic structure of Pd clusters grown on oxidized yttrium surfaces are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. The hydrogen sorption mediated by the Pd clusters is determined from the optically monitored switching kinetics of the underlying yttrium film. A strong thickness dependence of the hydrogen uptake is found. The el...

Modeling heterogeneous catalysts: metal clusters on planar oxide supports

Model catalysts consisting of Au and Ag clusters of varying size have been prepared on single crystal TiO2(110) and ultra-thin films of TiO2, SiO2 and Al2O3. The morphology, electronic structure, and catalytic properties of these Au and Ag clusters have been investigated using low-energy ion scattering spectroscopy (LEIS), temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscop...

Modification of Polyaniline/Polystyrene and Polyaniline/Metal Oxide Structure by Surfactant

Polyaniline/polystyrene (PAni/PS) composites were prepared in aqueous solution by polymerization of styrene and aniline in two-stages. Firstly styrene polymerize by using Ammonium persulfate (APS) as an oxidant in the presence of various surfactants such as poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and surfactive dopant sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate...

Electron tunneling through a monolayer of small metal clusters investigated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

We have investigated the current-voltage characteristic of monolayers of seperated metal clusters of a size of 1.4 nm with a low-temperature ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope. Apart from the usual charge-quantization phenomena, such as Coulomb blockade and staircase, negative differential resistance was observed by performing measurements at distinct locations on the cluster layers...

Ultrafine Gold Chains

How do the electronic properties of a metal atom change when clusters of different sizes and geometry are formed? Nilius et al. (p. 1853) used scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to build gold chains with defined numbers of atoms on a nickel-aluminum alloy surface. They then used the STM to perform scanning tunneling spectroscopy on these structures. Conductivity spectra taken at 30 points alon...
