چکیده

Origami, which is the construction of an object by folding a single sheet of paper, has been studied in the fields of mathematics and engineering. Several software programs for designing origami shapes have been recently developed, and so we can now obtain a variety of shapes. However, the variations designed with them are still limited. In this paper, we propose a new method for designing origami based on the sweep and reflection operations. As an example, a column-shaped origami object with a relief structure is designed using our method. The shape is defined by a profile polyline and a trajectory polyline that are input by the user. We developed a system on which the user inputs and edits the polylines to generate both the crease pattern and the 3DCG model of the origami object in real time. With the tools implemented in our system, the user can design a wider variety of shapes in a trial-and-error manner while seeing the effects of their operations. Thus, users can easily design stable and geometrically attractive shapes. We indicate the effectiveness and the potential of our system by showing some examples.

Design Considerations for Large Detector Arrays on Submillimeter-wave Telescopes

The emerging technology of large (∼ 10, 000 pixel) submillimeter-wave bolometer arrays presents a novel optical design problem—how can such arrays be fed by diffraction-limited telescope optics where the primary mirror is less than 100,000 wavelengths in diameter? Standard Cassegrain designs for radiotelescope optics exhibit focal surface curvature so large that detectors cannot be placed more ...

The Beauty and Utility of DNA Origami

INTRODUCTION TO DNA ORIGAMI Over the past three decades, DNA, the genetic information carrier in most living organisms, has seen an ever-expanding role as a material for the construction of nanoscale objects. One technique in particular, known as DNA origami, has opened up the ability for researchers to design arbitrarily shaped complex three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures. Origami refers to t...

Third International Workshop on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems, Seville, Spain, January 28-30, 2009. Proceedings

Transformation-based program synthesis is a hallmark of automated program development. Some time ago, we discovered that the design of a program could be expressed as a matrix of transformations, where both rows and columns represented features. The technique was called Origami, as the matrix was folded in precise ways (thereby composing transformations) until a scalar was produced. This scalar...

Forward Mapped Planar Mirror Reflections

This paper presents a new technique, which we call depth-preserving reflection mapping, to render mirror-like reflections on planar surfaces in constant time. It is a hybrid solution which combines geometry-based rendering and imagebased rendering into a two-pass mirror reflection rendering approach. The technique extends the traditional reflection mapping to preserve depth per texel and uses f...
