Failure Time and Microcrack Nucleation

چکیده
The failure time of samples of heterogeneous materials (wood, fiberglass) is studied as a function of the applied stress. It is shown that in these materials the failure time is predicted with a good accuracy by a model of microcrack nucleation proposed by Pomeau. It is also shown that the crack growth process presents critical features when the failure time is approached. It is very well known that different materials subjected to a constant load may break after a certain time, which is a function of the applied load [1-5]. Many models have been proposed to predict this failure time, but the physical mechanisms remain often unclear [4, 5]. Very recently Pomeau proposed a model [6], which explains quite well the failure time of microcrystals [7] and gels [8] submitted to a constant stress. This model is based on the interesting idea that a nucleation process of microcracks has to take place inside the materials, in order to form the macroscopic crack. This nucleation process is controlled by an activation law, as the coalescence of a phase into another in a liquid-solid transition. Based on this prediction [6], L. Pauchard et al.

Microcrack Initiation and Growth
A Monte Carlo simulation technique to predict the mean and scatter in fatigue lifetime of certain 2000 and 7000 series aluminum alloys is described. The method is based upon models of surface microcrack nucleation and early growth, which comprise the initiation phase of the fatigue failure process. The experimental basis for the models is discussed, and examples of predicted numbers and lengths...
متن کاملFailure time and critical behaviour of fracture precursors in heterogeneous materials
The acoustic emission of fracture precursors, and the failure time of samples of heterogeneous materials (wood, fiberglass) are studied as a function of the load features and geometry. It is shown that in these materials the failure time is predicted with a good accuracy by a model of microcrack nucleation proposed by Pomeau. We find that the time interval δt between events (precursors) and the...
متن کاملExperimental Study on Stress-induced Pre-failure Damage in Rocks and Its Applications to Earthquake Source-process Research Based on AE
This paper reviews recent studies concerning the evolution of the pre-failure damage in several common lithologies, subjected to differential compression, by using detailed acoustic emission (AE) data. The experimental results exhibit a damaging process characterized by three typical phases of microcracking activity: the primary, secondary, and nucleation phases, respectively. The primary phase...
متن کاملDYNAMIC TENSILE - FAILURE - INDUCED VELOCITY DEFICITS IN ROCK Allan
&bstracL Planar impact experiments were employed to induce dynamic tensile failure in Bedford limestone. Rock discs were impacted with aluminum and polymethyl methacralate (PMMA) flyer plates at velocities of 10 to 25 m/s. Tensile stress magnitudes and duration were chosen so as to induce a range of microcrack growth insufficient to cause complete spalling of the samples. Ultrasonic Pand S-wave...
متن کاملDistribution of microcrack lengths in bone in vivo and in vitro.
It is well known that bone contains small cracks; in vivo these microcracks are constantly growing and being repaired. Too rapid crack growth leads to stress fractures or fragility fractures. In vitro, changes occur in this population of microcracks when subjected to cyclic loading up to and including failure. Normally, the only parameters reported from such investigations are the number densit...
