چکیده

The remarkable regularity of rotational spectra of superdeformed nuclei has prompted many investigations into the contribution of higher multipoles on the formation of shell structure [1]. Related questions have arisen for other mesoscopic systems. In particular, it appears that octupole deformation has the same importance for two-dimensional systems like quantum dots and surface clusters [2] as for three-dimensional systems like nuclei [3] and metallic clusters [4]. Semi-classical analysis based on periodic orbit theory [5–7] provides substantial insight into the role of the octupole deformation for axially symmetric systems [8–10]. Axially symmetric octupole deformation which leads to soft chaos in the classical case produces short periodic orbits at particular parameter strengths, and, correspondingly, pronounced shell effects arise in the quantum spectrum [8,9]. Conservation of angular momentum may increase the regular region for a non-integrable problem with axial symmetry (see for example [11]). The situation becomes more complicated for nonaxial systems with three degrees of freedom, since angular momentum is no longer a constant of motion and the classical dynamics may lead to a stronger degree of chaos [12]. Inclusion of exotic, i.e. nonaxial, octupole deformations renders the finding of

Non-axial Octupole Deformations of N = Z Nuclei in A ∼ 60 − 80 Mass Region ∗

By performing a fully three dimensional Hartree-Fock calculation with use of the Skyrm forces, we demonstrate possibility of exotic deformations violating both the reflection and the axial symmetries of N = Z nuclei in A ∼ 60 − 80 mass region. The Y32 tetrahedral shape predicted in excited Zr arises from a shell gap at N,Z = 40 which is enhanced for the tetrahedron deformation. Softness toward ...

KUNS 1285 Periodic Orbits and New Shell Structure Generated by a Combination of Quadrupole and Octupole Deformations

In this talk, we would like to present a simple model in which a prominent shell structure emerges for a combination of quadrupole and octupole deformations. We shall then discuss the origin of such a new shell structure in terms of the periodic orbits and their bifurcations. Importance of shell effects for the occurrence of reflection-asymmetric deformed shapes have been lively discussed in va...

Quantum fluctuations and stability of tetrahedral deformations in atomic nuclei. The possible existence of stable axial octupole and tetrahedral deformations is investigated in 80 Zr and 98 Zr. HFBCS calculations with parity projection have been performed for various parametrizations of the Skyrme energy functional. The correlation and ex-citation energies of negative parity states associated w...

Periodic-Orbit Bifurcation and Shell Structure in Reflection-Asymmetric Deformed Cavity

Shell structure of the single-particle spectrum for reflection-asymmetric deformed cavity is investigated. Remarkable shell structure emerges for certain combinations of quadrupole and octupole deformations. Semiclassical periodicorbit analysis indicates that bifurcation of equatorial orbits plays an important role in the formation of this new shell structure. Theoretical and experimental explo...

Modeling the Shape: Some Contemporary Approaches to Quadrupole-Octupole Deformations in Atomic Nuclei

We will briefly review a few collective and microscopic model approaches currently developing with the aim to explore nuclear dynamic properties ensuing from the appearance of quadrupole-octupole deformations. We will depict the present status of the study of alternating-parity spectra in even-even nuclei and parity quasi-doublet sequences in odd-mass nuclei. Different model limits of octupole ...
