چکیده

Constructions Nouns and Verbs 2 Table 2. Simulation results. With no open class elements, the holophrase simulations yeild one construction per sentence. When nouns become “variables” in the verb islands, the sentences can be represented by 4 distinct constructions. When nouns and verbs are open class variables, the set of sentences can be representd by the two transitive and di-transitive constructions. In the second simulation of the "verb island" phase, the input was processed as in the holophrase condition, with the exception that nouns no longer contributed directly to the ConstructionIndex. Instead, their status as open class words and their relative sentence positions were encoded in the ConstructionIndex as in the simulations described in previous sections.

Experiments on the Acquisition of the Semantics and Grammatical Constructions Required for Communicating Propositional Logic Sentences

We describe some experiments which simulate a grounded approach to language acquisition in which a population of autonomous agents without prior linguistic knowledge tries to construct at the same time a conceptualisation of its environment and a shared language. The conceptualisation and language acquisition processes in each individual agent are based on general purpose cognitive capacities, ...

The Emergence of Morphosyntactic Case Systems

Despite centuries of research, the origins of grammatical case are more mysterious than ever. This paper addresses some unanswered questions through language game experiments in which a multi-agent population self-organizes a morphosyntactic case system. The experiments show how the formal part of grammatical constructions may pressure such emergent systems to become more economical.

An Agent-Based Model Studying the Acquisition of a Language System of Logical Constructions

This paper presents an agent-based model that studies the emergence and evolution of a language system of logical constructions, i.e. a vocabulary and a set of grammatical constructions that allows the expression of logical combinations of categories. The model assumes the agents have a common vocabulary for basic categories, the ability to construct logical combinations of categories using Boo...

An Agent-Based Model of the Emergence and Transmission of a Language System for the Expression of Logical Combinations

This paper presents an agent-based model of the emergence and transmission of a language system for the expression of logical combinations of propositions. The model assumes the agents have some cognitive capacities for invention, adoption, repair, induction and adaptation, a common vocabulary for basic categories, and the ability to construct complex concepts using recursive combinations of ba...

Grounded Learning of Grammatical Constructions

We describe a model of grammar learning in which all linguistic units are grounded in rich conceptual representations, and larger grammatical constructions involve relational mappings between form and meaning that are built up from smaller (e.g., lexical) constructions. The algorithm we describe for acquiring these grammatical constructions consists of three separate but interacting processes: ...
