Black Holes in Globular Clusters

چکیده

We consider the implications of the presence of ∼ 1 stellar-mass black hole (BH) at the center of a dense globular cluster. We show that BH X-ray binaries formed through exchange interactions are likely to have extremely low duty cycles (< 10−3), consistent with the absence of BH X-ray transients in Galactic globular clusters. In contrast, we find that BH X-ray binaries formed through tidal capture would be persistent, bright X-ray sources. Given the absence of any such source and the very high interaction rates, we conclude that tidal capture of a main-sequence star by a BH most likely leads to the complete disruption of the star. Three-Body Encounters of Black Holes in Globular Clusters

Evidence has been mounting for the existence of black holes with masses from 102 to 104 M⊙ associated with stellar clusters. Such intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) will encounter other black holes in the dense cores of these clusters. The binaries produced in these interactions will be perturbed by other objects as well thus changing the orbital characteristics of the binaries. These binari...

Production of intermediate-mass black holes in globular clusters

The discovery of numerous non-nuclear X-ray point sources with luminosities L . 10 erg s in several starburst galaxies has stimulated speculation about their nature and origin. The strong variability seen in several sources points to massive black holes as the central engines. If the flux is isotropic, the luminosities range up to <10 erg s, implying masses of M * 10 M( if the luminosity is sub...

Four-body Effects in Globular Cluster Black Hole Coalescence

In the high density cores of globular clusters, multibody interactions are expected to be common, with the result that black holes in binaries are hardened by interactions. It was shown by Sigurdsson & Hernquist (1993) and others that 10M black holes interacting exclusively by three-body encounters do not merge in the clusters themselves, because recoil kicks the binaries out of the clusters be...

We have followed the evolution of multi-mass star clusters containing massive central black holes through collisional N -body simulations done on GRAPE6. Each cluster is composed of between 16,384 to 131,072 stars together with a black hole with an initial mass of MBH = 1000M⊙. We follow the evolution of the clusters under the combined influence of two-body relaxation, stellar mass-loss and tid...

Prospects for detection of primordial black holes captured in cold dark matter haloes around massive objects

The capture of cold dark matter species, and especially primordial black holes, during the formation of gravitationally bound objects is analyzed. It is shown that the best conditions for an efficient gravitational capture were at the epoch preceding the galaxy formation, when the first astrophysical objects with masses of the order of Jeans mass 105–106 M were forming. Black hole haloes around...
