چکیده

BACKGROUND The most common long-term complication of radiation therapy (RT) for head and neck cancer is dry mouth or xerostomia. Salivary glands are radiosensitive; their destruction begins shortly after the initiation of therapy with the extent of injury directly related to the amount of radiation to which they are exposed. The subsequent xerostomia is challenging to manage, leads to multiple and often long-term oral complications, and can significantly impair patients’ quality of life. This article utilizes comprehensive review of literature, identified through publicly available search engines, to outline the current best practice recommendations for patients with RT-induced xerostomia.

Dr. Hutchinson and colleagues offer a Triological Society Best Practice article, entitled “What Are the Best Management Strategies for Radiation-Induced Xerostomia?” in the February 2014 issue of The Laryngoscope. In such a report, we should expect a high level of reliance on rigorous scientific standards. Unfortunately, this was not the case when the review was turned to a favorite of alternat...

Quantitative assessment of salivary gland function by radioisotopic scanning in a randomized trial of Pilocarpine for prevention of radiation induced Xerostomia [Persian]

Introduction: Radioisotope scanning is the best method for objective assessment of salivary gland function. Thus, it was used in a randomized trial of concomitant pilocarpine for assessment of radiation-induced xerostomia, in addition to subjective evaluation by an approved questionnaire and objective standard xerostomia grading. Methods: Patients randomized in placebo-controlled trial of...

In response to What are the best management strategies for radiation-induced xerostomia?

We appreciate Dr. Hopfenspirger’s comments and his interest in our review. We agree that the use of acupuncture is controversial secondary to factors such as a placebo effect and the limited number of participants included in the studies performed to date. However, we do not believe that it is appropriate to deem a randomized controlled trial speculative with any evidence of “efficacy unsupport...
