High expectations are set towards doctoral education in technology, management and business administration in any university, for instance, in terms of a four year time goal for a doctor’s degree. An increasing number of doctoral candidates pursue their studies on a part-time basis. Four-year throughput times and tightly scheduled doctoral programs do not necessarily apply for part-time doctoral studies – delays are likely. Earlier research has examined success and progress with doctoral studies primarily with full-time doctoral candidate samples and after degree accomplishments. The success and progress of delayed, part-time doctoral studies has not received much research attention, yet. This study concerns doctoral students’ satisfaction with doctoral education and its possible linkages to research progress. Also, perceived degree of challenge is examined. The empirical study is based on a survey questionnaire among the delayed, part-time doctoral students of one department at Helsinki University of Technology. The results show that a significant proportion of perceived research progress is explained through challenge in research, dissatisfaction towards theme seminars, satisfaction with individual instruction and satisfaction with information availability. The findings encourage university departments to consider unique, individualized study paths for delayed, part-time doctoral students, besides paying effort to tightly defined full-time doctoral programs.
