چکیده

Scaling laws arc the most fundamental aspect of every physical theory. Recently. the problem of scaling law and size effect in the theories of structural failure has received considerahle attention, particularly with regard to distrihuted damage and nonlinear fracture behavior. The paper presents a rigorous mathematical analysis of scaling in various types of failure theories in structural mechanics. First it is shown that the scaling law is a power law if, and only if, a characteristic dimension is absent. For all the theories in which the failure condition is expressed in terms of stress or strain only, including elasticity with a strength limit, plasticity, and continuum damage mechanics, the nominal strength of the structure is shown to be independent of its size. For linear-clastic fracture mechanics, in which the failure criterion is expressed in terms of energy per unit area, the scaling law for the nominal strength is shown to be (size) -II', provided that the cracks in structures of different sizes are geometrically similar. When the failure condition involves both the strcss (or strain) and the energy pcr unit arca, which is typical of quasibrittle materials, the scaling law represents a gradual transition from the strength theory, which is asymptotically approached for very small sizes, to LEFM, which is asymptotically approached for very large sizes. The size effect descrihed by Weihull statistical theory of random material strength is also considered, and the reasons for its inapplicability to quasi brittle materials arc explained. Finally, lIoating clastic plates with large bending fractures and a negligible process-zone size arc shown to exhibit an anomalous scaling law, such that the nominal strength is proportional to (size)''', and another anomalous size effcct of the type (size)-''', pertinent to one recent theory of borehole breakout, is pointed out.

Scaling laws in the macro-, micro- and nanoworlds

The microworld and the nanoworld are now of interest to the public, scientists, engineers and industrialists. Effects negligible at the macroscopic level become important at the micrometre scale, and vice versa. Moreover, at the nanoscale, quantum effects may become dominant. Scaling laws are useful for an understanding of the origin of such differences and/or to generalize results obtained at ...

Scaling theory for quasibrittle structural failure.

This inaugural article has a twofold purpose: (i) to present a simpler and more general justification of the fundamental scaling laws of quasibrittle fracture, bridging the asymptotic behaviors of plasticity, linear elastic fracture mechanics, and Weibull statistical theory of brittle failure, and (ii) to give a broad but succinct overview of various applications and ramifications covering many...

Application of Rheological Modeling in Food Emulsions

Various scaling methods such as relative viscosity, Peclet and Reynolds scaling were used to find the best scaling law. Scaling and modeling of the flow curves of various model emulsions consist of Tragacanth Gum (TG) (0.5, 1 % wt), Oleic acid (5, 10% v/v) and WPI (2, 4 % wt) were investigated and the best models were selected. As these emulsions are non-Newtonian, they do not obey the usual...

Are scaling laws on strength of solids related to mechanics or to geometry?

One of the largest controversial issues of the materials science community is the interpretation of scaling laws on material strength. In spite of the prevailing view, which considers mechanics as the real cause of such effects, here, we propose a different argument, purely based on geometry. Thus, as happened for relativity, geometry could again hold an unexpected and fundamental role.

Review of Hydrodynamic Scaling Laws in Aquatic Locomotion and Fishlike Swimming

We consider observations and data from live fish and cetaceans, as well as data from engineered flapping foils and fishlike robots, and compare them against fluid mechanics based scaling laws. These laws have been derived on theoretical/numerical/experimental grounds to optimize the power needed for propulsion, or the energy needed for turning and fast starting. The rhythmic, oscillatory motion...
