Chemocauterization of the internal opening with trichloroacetic acid as first-line treatment for pyriform sinus fistula.

چکیده
BACKGROUND Pyriform sinus fistula is a rare brachial pouch anomaly. However, it is difficult and risky to remove the fistula tract completely. Circumferential chemocauterization of the internal opening with trichloroacetic acid (TCA) for pyriform sinus fistula is simple, reproducible, reliable, and causes less morbidity. The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of TCA chemocauterization for pyriform sinus fistula. METHODS This retrospective study enrolled 44 patients who were diagnosed with pyriform sinus fistula and underwent TCA chemocauterization. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of the patients to obtain their demography as well as treatment outcomes for them. RESULTS The success rate of treatment for pyriform sinus fistula after the first TCA chemocauterization was 77.3% (34/44) and the cumulative success rate after the second treatment was 93.2% (41/44). There was no complication such as vocal fold palsy after TCA chemocauterization. CONCLUSIONS It is suggested that TCA chemocauterization can be a reasonable first-line treatment for pyriform sinus fistula.

Temporary vocal fold immobility after chemocauterization of the pyriform sinus fistula opening with trichloroacetic acid.
Pyriform sinus fistula (PSF) is a rare branchial pouch anomaly. Circumferential chemocauterization of the opening with trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is a simple, reliable treatment of choice with little morbidity. However, we experienced two cases of vocal fold immobility after chemocauterization of the PSF opening with TCA. Vocal fold mobility recovered spontaneously within 8 weeks in both cases....

Objectives. Pyriform sinus fistulae arise from disturbances in the development of the fetal third and fourth branchial pouches and are predominantly found on the left side. We report the rare case of a right-sided pyriform sinus fistula presenting as a lateral neck abscess. Study Design. Case report. Methods. A 24-year-old woman presented with a two-week history of right-sided neck abscess. A f...
متن کاملRefractory acute suppurative thyroiditis secondary to pyriform sinus fistula
Acute suppurative thyroiditis is a rare disease because the thyroid gland is remarkably resistant to infection. We present a 2-year-old girl with refractory acute suppurative thyroiditis due to a pyriform sinus fistula (PSF). She complained of fever and painful anterior neck swelling. Her condition did not completely improved by multiple parenteral antibiotics along with incision and drainage. ...
متن کاملChemocauterization of Congenital Fistula from the Accessory Parotid Gland
Congenital sialo-cutaneous fistula arising from the accessory parotid gland is extremely rare. Although the fistula tract can be successfully excised after making a skin incision along the skin tension line around the fistula opening, a facial scar inevitably remains. We here report a case of sialo-cutaneous fistula that was treated with chemocauterization with trichloroacetic acid (TCA). TCA c...
متن کاملNeck infection associated with pyriform sinus fistula: imaging findings.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Acute suppurative neck infections associated with branchial fistulas are frequently recurrent. In this study, we describe the imaging findings of acute suppurative infection of the neck caused by a third or fourth branchial fistula (pyriform sinus fistula). METHODS Imaging findings were reviewed in 17 patients (11 female and six male patients, 2 to 49 years old) with ne...
