An Overview of Eddies and STAIRs

چکیده

In databases where different resources have much changing characteristics, static query plans is often not a good solution. The problem is that, while a particular query plan might be a good alternative with some initial characteristics of the database, it may be a bad alternative when the characteristics changes. Consider, for example, joining the tables R, S and T , and assume first that R and S contain 1000 rows and T contains 10 rows. Clearly, it is best to not use the join ordering (R on S) on T but to choose any other ordering such as (T on R) on S. However, if the size of T drastically increases to 1, 000, 000 rows, this is not a good choice anymore. In this overview we present the ideas of [1, 2] which suggests two adaptive query operators called Eddies and STAIRs. Using these operators instead of traditional ones, the query plans need not be fixed, but can be changed on a tuple-by-tuple basis. In the following, Section 2 starts by presenting the Eddy operator and discuss some of its shortcomings. After that, Section 3 presents the STAIR operator and how it can be used to overcome these shortcomings. Finally, Section 4 concludes the overview. For in-depth information about Eddies and STAIRs see [1, 2].

Overview of Direct Numerical Simulation of Particle Entrainment in Turbulent Flows

An overview of removal and re-entrainment of particles in turbulent flows is presented. The procedure for the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Navier-Stokes equation via a pseudospectral method for simulating the instantaneous fluid velocity field is described. Particle removal mechanisms in turbulent flows in a duct are examined and effects of the near-wall coherent eddies on the parti...

A contribution to approximate analytical evaluation of Fourier series via an Applied Analysis standpoint; an application in turbulence spectrum of eddies

In the present paper, we shall attempt to make a contribution to approximate analytical evaluation of the harmonic decomposition of an arbitrary continuous function. The basic assumption is that the class of functions that we investigate here, except the verification of Dirichlet's principles, is concurrently able to be expanded in Taylor's representation, over a particular interval of their do...

Lifting the Burden of History from Adaptive Query Processing

Adaptive query processing schemes attempt to reoptimize query plans during the course of query execution. A variety of techniques for adaptive query processing have been proposed, varying in the granularity at which they can make decisions [8]. The eddy [1] is the most aggressive of these techniques, with the flexibility to choose tuple-by-tuple how to order the application of operators. In thi...

Stairs or Lifts? - A Study of Human Factors associated with Lift/Elevator usage during Evacuations using an online Survey

This paper presents an overview of human factors data collected via an online survey related to the use of lifts (elevators) and stairs during both circulation and evacuation scenarios. Survey participants were presented with a series of hypothetical situations and asked how they would behave. The survey was split into two broad sections, the first dealing with normal circulation usage of lifts...

Mesoscale eddies in the South China Sea observed with altimeter data

[1] A composite time series (1993–2000) of sea surface height anomaly from several satellites is used to identify eddies in the South China Sea (SCS). The eddy lifetime, radius, strength, and straight-line travel distance are estimated. Altogether 58 anticyclonic eddies and 28 cyclonic eddies are identified for this period. They are grouped into four geographical zones according to known eddy g...
