Detecting other-regarding behavior with virtual players

چکیده
Humans display levels of cooperative behavior that contradict the predictions of theoretical models of rational self-interested individuals. We propose a novel technique to discriminate among other-regarding behavior, self-interested strategic play, and decision errors in laboratory experiments. We introduce “virtual players” in two public goods experiments to remove the concerns of human subjects for other players. Comparing contributions across treatments, we find that other-regarding behavior elevates contributions. The results also suggest that subjects are motivated by fairness considerations. We discuss ways in which the virtual-player technique can discriminate among competing explanations of behavior observed in other experiments. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Guidelines for Developing Explainable Cognitive Models1
Cognitive models can be used to generate the behavior of virtual players in simulation-based training systems. To learn from such training, the virtual players must display realistic human behavior, and trainees need to understand why the other players behave the way they do. This understanding can be achieved by explaining the underlying reasons for the virtual players’ behavior. In this paper...
متن کاملEfficiently detecting outlying behavior in video-game players
In this paper, we propose a method for automatically detecting the times during which game players exhibit specific behavior, such as when players commonly show excitement, concentration, immersion, and surprise. The proposed method detects such outlying behavior based on the game players' characteristics. These characteristics are captured non-invasively in a general game environment. In this ...
متن کاملVirtual Consumption: Using Player Types to Explore Virtual Consumer Behavior
As virtual economies begin to interact more with real world economies, it is important to consider the in-game activities that players engage in, which create and transfer game currency. Specifically, we examine products and services that players offer to each other within MMORPGs. We use Bartle’s taxonomy of player types to illustrate the different behavioral approaches players have in consumi...
متن کاملExplaining and Predicting the Behavior of BDI-Based Agents in Role-Playing Games
Virtual characters in games operate in a social context involving other characters and human players. If such socially situated virtual characters are to be considered believable, they should be able to adjust their behavior based on beliefs about the mental states of other characters and human players. Autonomous BDI-based agents are suitable for modeling characters that exhibit such intention...
متن کاملSelling Virtual Currency in Digital Games: Implications on Gameplay and Social Welfare1
Despite the fast growing popularity of in-game purchases of virtual currency (to obtain game enhancing virtual items) in digital games, there is very limited formal research that studies this new business model and its impacts on players’ gameplay behavior and social welfare. This paper builds upon the classic labor-leisure model to capture players’ dual experience of enjoying leisure and earni...
