Determining the effective sample size of a parametric prior.

چکیده
We present a definition for the effective sample size of a parametric prior distribution in a Bayesian model, and propose methods for computing the effective sample size in a variety of settings. Our approach first constructs a prior chosen to be vague in a suitable sense, and updates this prior to obtain a sequence of posteriors corresponding to each of a range of sample sizes. We then compute a distance between each posterior and the parametric prior, defined in terms of the curvature of the logarithm of each distribution, and the posterior minimizing the distance defines the effective sample size of the prior. For cases where the distance cannot be computed analytically, we provide a numerical approximation based on Monte Carlo simulation. We provide general guidelines for application, illustrate the method in several standard cases where the answer seems obvious, and then apply it to some nonstandard settings.

Bayesian Sample size Determination for Longitudinal Studies with Continuous Response using Marginal Models
Introduction Longitudinal study designs are common in a lot of scientific researches, especially in medical, social and economic sciences. The reason is that longitudinal studies allow researchers to measure changes of each individual over time and often have higher statistical power than cross-sectional studies. Choosing an appropriate sample size is a crucial step in a successful study. A st...
متن کاملDetermining the sample size required to compare vegetation and soil characteristics in two independent groups using effect size
Extended Abstract Background and objectives: One of the important steps in assessing rangeland vegetation is determining the sample size. Adequacy of sample size and its determination is always one of the main concerns of rangeland vegetation analyzer. There are two general methods for determining the sample size in rangeland science: graphic and statistical methods. In this study, the sample...
متن کاملEstimation of parameter of proportion in Binomial Distribution Using Adjusted Prior Distribution
Historically, various methods were suggested for the estimation of Bernoulli and Binomial distributions parameter. One of the suggested methods is the Bayesian method, which is based on employing prior distribution. Their sound selection on parameter space play a crucial role in reducing posterior Bayesian estimator error. At times, large scale of the parametric changes on parameter space bring...
متن کاملOptimal Non-Parametric Prediction Intervals for Order Statistics with Random Sample Size
In many experiments, such as biology and quality control problems, sample size cannot always be considered as a constant value. Therefore, the problem of predicting future data when the sample size is an integer-valued random variable can be an important issue. This paper describes the prediction problem of future order statistics based on upper and lower records. Two different cases for the ...
متن کاملBayesian and Information-theoretic Priors for Bayesian Network Parameters
We consider Bayesian and information-theoretic approaches for determining non-informative prior distributions in a parametric model family. The information-theoretic approaches are based on the recently modiied deenition of stochastic complexity by Rissanen, and on the Minimum Message Length (MML) approach by Wallace. The Bayesian alternatives include the uniform prior, and the equivalent sampl...
