Balanced Scorecards and Gqm: What Are the Differences?
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper compares two quantitative approaches recommended for developing and supporting software process improvements, that is, the Goal-Question-Metric (GQM) technique and the Balanced Scorecard (BSc) framework. While both offer the opportunity to implement a quantitative analysis of software projects, they are often misinterpreted as either interchangeable or, on the contrary, mutually exclusive. After summarising the key aspects of the two approaches, three main characteristics are proposed as a basis of comparison: measurement object, nature of the approach and strategy. These make it possible to identify similarities as well as key differences. In particular, it will be illustrated that strategy is the key point of differentiation between the two. More specifically, the added value in the BSc approach resides in its structuring of a causal relationship chain among the business goals of the various perspectives, which allows for a proper alignment of business and operative goals for achieving success. Examples of the research effort on the joint use of GQM and BSc are presented, as well as the way in which they can contribute to improving the extensions of BSc to the IT field, such as improvements to the ESI-Balanced IT Scorecard (BITS).

To provide valuable support for successful decision-making, managers need a balanced set of financial and nonfinancial measures that represent different requirements, strategic goals, strategies, resources, and capabilities and the causal relationships between these domains. The balanced scorecard is such a measurement system. As an open system the balanced scorecard facilitates the considerati...
متن کاملA Novel Balanced Scorecard Design Based on Fuzzy Analytic Network Process and its Application
In this paper, we propose a novel balanced scorecard design based on fuzzy analytic network process and then conduct performance evaluation through a case study. After analyzing the related works about balanced scorecard design and the algorithm of fuzzy analytic network process, we illustrate the improved balanced scorecard design. Firstly, the basic concepts for the balanced scorecards are in...

In a previous paper (Kaplan and Norton 2001b), we described the role for strategy maps and Balanced Scorecards to develop performance objectives and measures linked to strategy. With this paper, we show how organizations use their scorecards to align key management processes and systems to the strategy. We also discuss the relationship of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) to other financial and cost...

Aligning business strategy to enterprise models requires explicit models from both areas, mapped to each other. Mapping existing business strategy definition approaches to requirement engineering practices improves strategy dissemination towards development. In this paper we present an illustration of such a mapping using the Strategy Maps and Balanced Scorecards as a business strategy approach...
