چکیده

In the Data AirWaves Project at University of Maryland, we are integrating Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) systems with terrestrial networks to provide a hybrid and e ective communication substrate lying between data resources and remote/mobile user applications. Smooth integration of these two media balances the need for rapid data dissemination to very large numbers of clients and on{demand interactive data services. This paper describes the air{cache, a method for e ective data broadcasting and an algorithm which rapidly adapts the content of the cache based on the \misses" which result in explicit (on{demand) data requests. Simulation results show that the hypothesis of adapting based only on the misses performs quite reasonably and has very little deviation from a system that has complete information { both hits and misses. This material is based upon work supported by the Center for Satellite and Hybrid Communication Networks under NASA grant NAGW{2777, by the National Science Foundation under Grants No. NSF EEC 94{02384 and No. ASC 9318183, and by ARPA under Grant No. F30602{93{C{0177

Multi-Level Multi-Channel Air Cache Designs for Broadcasting in a Mobile Environment

In this paper, we investigate efficient ways of broadcasting data to mobile users over multiple physical channels, which cannot be coalesced into a lesser number of highbandwidth channels. We propose the use of MLMC (MultiLevel Multi-Channel ) Air-Cache which can provide mobile users with data based on their popularity factor. We provide a wide range of design considerations for the server whic...

Client-Driven Joint Cache Management and Rate Adaptation for Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP

Due to the fact that proxy-driven proxy cache management and the client-driven streaming solution of Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) are two independent processes, some difficulties and challenges arise in media data management at the proxy cache and rate adaptation at the DASH client. This paper presents a novel client-driven joint proxy cache management andDASH rate adaptationmetho...

Adaptive multiversion data broadcast organizations

Broadcasting provides an efficient means for disseminating information in both wired and wireless setting. In this paper, we propose a suite of broadcast organization schemes for multiversion data broadcast, i.e., data broadcast in which more than one value is broadcast per data item. Besides increasing the concurrency of client transactions, multiversion broadcast provides clients with the pos...

Database Caching Over the Air-Storage

Previous research on broadcast databases in a mobile computing environment utilizing wireless channels has been focused on mechanisms for a mobile client to selectively pick database items in which the client is interested from a broadcast channel. The fundamental issue of identifying the appropriate database items for broadcast or refrained from being broadcast have largely been ignored. In th...
