A quantum threat to special relativity.

marc h 20 09 JE A N -F RA N CO IS P O D EV IN Our intuition, going back forever, is that to move, say, a rock, one has to touch that rock, or touch a stick that touches the rock, or give an order that travels via vibrations through the air to the ear of a man with a stick that can then push the rock—or some such sequence. This intuition, more generally, is that things can only directly affect other things that are right next to them. If A affects B without being right next to it, then the effect in question must be indirect—the effect in question must be something that gets transmitted by means of a chain of events in which each event brings about the next one directly, in a manner that smoothly spans the distance from A to B. Every time we think we can come up with an exception to this intuition—say, flipping a switch that turns on city street lights (but then we realize that this happens through wires) or listening to a BBC radio broadcast (but then we realize that radio waves propagate through the air)—it turns out that we have not, in fact, thought of an exception. Not, that is, in our everyday experience of the world. We term this intuition “locality.” Quantum mechanics has upended many an intuition, but none deeper than this one. And this particular upending carries with it a threat, as yet unresolved, to special relativity—a foundation stone of our 21st-century physics.

The Principle of Relativity: From Ungar’s Gyrolanguage for Physics to Weaving Computation in Mathematics
This paper extends the scope of algebraic computation based on a non standard $times$ to the more basic case of a non standard $+$, where standard means associative and commutative. Two physically meaningful examples of a non standard $+$ are provided by the observation of motion in Special Relativity, from either outside (3D) or inside (2D or more), We revisit the ``gyro''-theory ...
متن کاملLogic and relativity theory
István Németi, together with Hajnal Andréka founded and lead the Hungarian logic and relativity school. They havemade numerous significant contributions both in logic and in relativity theory and in their interconnections. To celebrate their contributions, on the occasion of István’s 70th birthday, a series of conferences focusing on logic and relativity theory, and beyond, was inaugurated by T...
متن کاملLinking String and Membrane Theory to Quantum Mechanics and Special Relativity Equations, Avoiding Any Special Relativity Assumptions
M-brane quark string theory and the Supergravity theory require 10 spatial dimensions. But if dimensions greater than 3 do exist, this must have important effects in other branches of physics, as quark theory cannot be compartmentalised-off. This paper shows how the concept of multidimensional space, essential to explain particle physics phenomena, removes conflicts between quantum theory and r...
متن کاملWhy special relativity should not be a template for a fundamental reformulation of quantum mechanics
In a comparison of the principles of special relativity and of quantum mechanics, the former theory is marked by its relative economy and apparent explanatory simplicity. A number of theorists have thus been led to search for a small number of postulates—essentially information theoretic in nature—that would play the role in quantum mechanics that the relativity principle and the light postulat...
متن کاملSpecial Relativity at the Quantum Scale
It has been suggested that the space-time structure as described by the theory of special relativity is a macroscopic manifestation of a more fundamental quantum structure (pre-geometry). Efforts to quantify this idea have come mainly from the area of abstract quantum logic theory. Here we present a preliminary attempt to develop a quantum formulation of special relativity based on a model that...
